Hello there, I found this site whilst researching some rugs that I have at home and hope you will be able to help identify them for me.

I am posting them in two posts, as three are very similar. This post refers to a rug that seems to be made of possibly silk, cotton and some sort of hair. The rug is 3'6" x 6'6" approximately. It has a very silky feel to it and also has a very distinct cool feel underfoot.

Thanks in anticipation of any help you can give.

All the best

Tai

As far as I can tell by the images, this is a Turkish rug and worth somewhere around 400-450 USD. If you are going to be using it on your floor, I recommend you have the fringes chain-stitched to prevent the pile from unraveling, and also have the selvedge fixed to protect the sides of the rug. This is a good looking rug with a nice pattern and color combination, so do the minor repairs to it and enjoy it on your floor.

Thank you very much for your quick response. The carpet is 20 plus years old and I wondered if it is indeed silk, and also what animal is the hair from?

Smiling at you

Hi - this rug is actually an Afghan Balouch, probably about 30 years old, all wool, and in it's present condition worth under $100. These are fairly common rugs online, especially on Ebay. New ones are still being made in this design.
I hope this helps~

Thank you for your input. I find it a surprise and as expected prefer the alternative opinion. I have just looked on ebay and not found one of similar pattern or colour, and your opinion on what it is made of, is at odds with the sight of what looks like 'course hair' of some sort embedded along the edges of the carpet. It seems to be a bit of a mystery that it thickening! Or should I say, sickening!!lol

Smiling at you

Hi Tai - I've attached photos of several Afghan Balouch rugs that I have/had in inventory. In reference to the 'coarse hair' along the edges, that is what is left of the braided goat hair selveges, which is the common finish for edges of Afghan Balouchs. Your rug has lost almost all of the selveges and some of the end borders where it is unraveling.
What I love about Afghan Balouchs is the imagination and quirkiness in the designs -even when a weaver is following a pattern he or she always inserts something different or personal into the rug. Notice the cats and cell phones in one of the rugs :)
