...i'm not too familiar w/ these rugs, but am starting to really dig them...

found this on craigslist, seller states:

"...rug is in excellent condition for being approximately 100 years old. No stains, tears, rips , smells. We don't have kids or pets and while improbable even to me, we have not spilled red wine on it. Fringe is original. Rug is late 19th, early 20th century. Rug is in storage now, not in use."

rug is approximately 6' 11" by 10' 3" and has a pad cut to fit... from my quick observation, it looks like it's been shortened w/ a repair similar to what was done on our sarouk...

...asking price: 2000

so, what do 'we' think...

thanks.

ps...we are completely enjoying the sarouk we found and had repaired...it just looks amazing in our bedroom and am glad we did the repairs to get rid of the foolish fake fringe... i did have mo of connoisseur rug give me his estimate, and he thought it was worth roughly 3500 to 4000...just for reference... either way, we love it and will hope to have it for it's next 80+ years...

Not 100 years...there are no elements and colours of an antique Heriz. I will drop it in 1940. And value will be 500,- USD for a good condition carpet.

The you have is a beauty, great to hear you had someone look at it. I forgot what we said about value on it, but I do remember it being a good deal.

I don't disagree with chris on the age, and think 1940 is a pretty fair estimation. Could even be a little newer. Some here may disagree, but my opinion with Heriz is the feel and density has a lot to do with the value. a lot of these outlying villages make these rugs a little looser than a true, well packed heriz. if it's a nice, dense example, these number may be a little different. Bottom line, there is not a snowball's chance of this being 100 years old. However, I would say the asking price is a bit on the higher side of retail (ordinarily should be washed before sale) but for private party, I would think 600-750 would not be out of line. mosaic, as you mentioned, it's been overcast. If that one end did not go into the minor guard I would say maybe 900 would be ok although in reality, the loss could have been as little as three to five rows of knots.

...thanks for the comments...i love the learning process you guys impart...

...yea, i probably won't make a move since this rug is in boston and i'm in chicago...

...and thanks for the sarouk comments, we do love it...the cool thing about rugs is that it seems as though you can visually pull something out of the rug that who swear was not there yesterday... amazing... oh, and i just posted another one i found...an ivory sarouk...

...also, i don't know why i'm still looking for a dining room rug considering our 15-month-old loves to throw all of his food on the floors!!!! ahh, but i do love them and the hunt...

In the picture of the back of the rug (the one with the hand in it), you can see that some of the cotton foundation of the rug is completely exposed. This is a sign of moth damage, so it is at least there, and I suspect in other parts of the rug.

Just something to keep in mind when trolling and looking at pics in the future. You're right to pass on this one.
