Salam, Rug Enthusiasts!
What a neat forum. I'm happy to have been introduced to it. Now to introduce you to my father and I who are sharing this jahannandsons username:
My father, Mahmoud, and I run a Persian carpet shop in the Washington, DC metro area. Counting me, five generations of my family have been in this business, starting years ago in Iran where my folks manufactured Kashan rugs. At present, we do quite a bit of sales, cleaning, repair, appraising, etc. from our brick and mortar store which we've had for 30 years. In recent months we've tried to come into the 21st century by creating a Facebook page, joining Twitter, eBay, and hopefully come this winter, we'll have a much more exciting website.
Identifying rugs is almost like a game for my dad. He just loves it, and I'm trying my best to learn what he knows. A quick tip for folks who are learning, like myself, is that it is all in the color schemes. I tried to memorize patterns at first, but then realized that everyone steals patterns from each other! But, they can't steal colors from each other because replicating the exact same dying conditions is almost impossible. Pay attention to red colors, and you'll see what I mean.
While I know this isn't a place to advertise, I will post my contact information just this once in the event anyone on here needs some help with their rugs in the DC-metro area. Even if you're not around here, you're more than welcome to send us an email or give us a call if you ever need some rug advice.
