Hello,

I was told this rug was from Nepal and was "hand tied". Can anyone tell me if this is true and what it's value might be? It's kind of strange on the back, it has all these long threads. It looks as if it was intended to be that way. (See photo) Does that affect it's value? It measures about 50 x 66 inches and is in good condition. It's really quite lovely. Thanks for your help!

The rug is officially a "kilim" which simply means it is a rug hand knotted in a different fashion. Therefore, what you're seeing isn't an problem it's just the way the rug is made. A very nice looking kilim is I might add. However, I can't add any other info regarding the rug due to my lack of knowledge, but I do think you have a very nice rug. If I merely was to guess from my limited knowledge I would say that is a Causian rather than a Tibetian. But that is only a quess.

It is a Soumak weave and looking at the sides and tassels probably Turkish. Back is supposed to be like that and it is definitely hand made. Soumak is a wrapping technique where the weft is wrapped around the warp. Very pretty rug.

ufuk is right. he hit the nail on the head. sumac weave, probably not nepal. May be turkish. Actually really good guess. There is a slight possibility of Iran too. I would imagine age to be 50 years but I am not familiar with these rugs so please do not quote. I will send this one to a few people to see if they have ideas.
