Hi all,

I bought this rug second hand in Seoul, South Korea in 2005. I'm getting ready to move and need to decide if I should try to sell this rug or take it to goodwill. It is approximately 4x7 and the store I bought it from said it was made in Iran. Other than that I know nothing about it and any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This is a very attractive little rug. Good knot count maybe 15x17+. It was probably made in Iran and may have some age to it. I would try selling it maybe on eBay. The design is similar to a Kashan. How much did you pay for this?

Thanks for the response. I think with the exchange rate at the time I paid around $400. I picked it because it was one of the few rugs that was red and black rather than red and blue if that makes a difference. What does "15x17+" refer to?

Retail would be more in the states, but things have been slow. 15x17 means your rug is 255 KPSI or more. kpsi means knots per square inch. Is the bronze fiber in the kilim silk?

Definitely Persian, and with that knot count, I think Kashan would be a good guess. It looks like (on my monitor) the rug has either photo-fading (sun/light fading) or the face has been (over)aggressively chem washed, causing the red to turn to a sort of rust color. Note the color change when comparing the shot of the end finish taken from the backside, as opposed to the endshot taken from the face. We also see this color shift when bleaches/reducers used to whiten fringe wicks into the pile area, but this causes a change in the knot backs as well as the face...
The colors also tell us this rug was never destined for the US market, but I like it. If I were you, I'd wash & store it. Your situation may change...

I would agree with nathan, and second the point about washing before storing if choose to go that route.

If I had to make a guess about exactly what this may be, I would say it could be a very fine quality meshed due to the fashion the kilim has been finished with the bronze fiber. Design has those old ardebil lanterns which are pretty cool. colors are a bit bright, but don't detract from the overall piece. although the point about isolated areas of discoloration is valid, this is not particularly good, but I don't think it kills the value of the rug necessarily unless the area is dry or brittle.

Thanks again for the help. The discoloration was there when I bought the rug, but the pile does not feel brittle or stiff in those spots. I haven't done anything to clean the rug other than vaccum it.

I don't really have the ability to store the rug (military). Since it does appear that I will be selling, is ebay my best option? I'm uncomfortable with trying to set a price and deal with shipping.

If you do sell on eBay, just state that the buyer is responsible for actual shipping/handling charges. If you're still in Ohio, you can take the rug to a UPS store (or Mailboxes Etc.) and they will deal with wrapping/shipping.
Perhaps you could find a rug dealer or antiques shop that will sell it on consignment for you? How about loaning it to a family member/friend? eBay is a tough market, so if you list it there don't expect big $$. While I've never sold on eBay, just purchased, I tend to bid more on auctions with no reserve price.

You can also try Craiglist (free) since it would be local without a concern for shipping, or do Craiglist and ebay at the same time. You can always put a starting bid on ebay so you can be quarenteed that amount. Then if it get the startng bid you can pull it from Craigslist, or if it hits the startng bid you can pull Craiglist.

Good luck, I wishI could say, hey I'll buy it, but I've reached my limit on rugs about 6 weeks ago and still kept on buying.
