Hello all

I bought a carpet today for my dining room. While surfing the web looking for care instructions, I found this facinating forum. I've alway been interested in collecting things and now my interest is piqued. I'd really like to learn more about oriental rugs. I've always admired the rich patterns and colors.

Anyway, here's what I bought today. It's 10 x 13 and in good shape except for a small area shown in one of the pics. (I'm thinking it probably can be repaired.) No stains that I can see. I don't think the rug is old. It's in too good of shape. The rug is perfect for my art deco dining set and really didn't give any thought if it was hand or machine made at the time. The price was fair - it was in a charity shop - and the money went to a good cause.

I've read much of the information on this site and would be interested in any info you care to share.

Thanks in advance - Rt

Welcome to the Forum! interesting piece. I saw a guest appearance by a few deer.... and a dog! :)

The rug is signed, Krow may be able to help determine what that may say. I don't read unfortunately. There is a fair amount of wear to the center. that does impact the value significantly, although it's a very fun piece. Age is probably 1950's

The design says to me this may be a Kashamar. It is hand knotted. Couldn't tell but it looked like there may have been some end loss, it's important to have these secured if the rug will receive higher traffic. I see it's in a dining room area (with a really cool table). Don't know how much you entertain, but that's something to keep in mind to prevent end loss. Do you mind me asking how much you paid?

Thanks for the quick reply RugPro. I paid just under $1000 with tax, title, and license. (I could have waited until next week when the price would have gone down to $600, but I couldn't pass it up.) I do entertain quite a bit, so I'll need to look at having the rug secured. I know there are oriental rug repair places in town.

I place to go back to the shop tomorrow and flip all of the rugs over - I'll learn my way around oriental rugs if it kills me :-)

Thanks for the info. It's a great starting place.

cool, no prob.

the technique you'll want to inquire about is called "overcasting". Sometimes it can be cost prohibitive, but if you're handy with a thick needle and thread it's not too hard to learn how to finish it well.....

Glad you found us : )

Thanks for the overcasting link. I've done a fair share of upholstery, so I'll give it a go. Worse comes to worst, I'll take it to a professional.

I think I'm embarking on a new, and probably very expensive hobby :-)

Hi!

First, I am novice and leave the important stuff to RugPro and others. I think the rug is wonderful! Very individual, great colors and harmony of design; nothing gratuitous. I particularly luv the resting deer with his or her legs folded neatly under him or her.

Second, I ditto rugPro! The dining room suite is amazing. You have amazing eye. Is table top mahogany or rosewood?????
Are the metallic-appearing parts gilded or actually metal? It is FABULOUS, yr new rug is perfect with it and also an original, uncommon, not cliched choice.

Finally.....you have been Bitten by The Rug Bug. Will it make you insane? Count on it! But you will not mind it at ALL.

And kuddos for celebrating charity! It's ALL GOOD.

The inscription on the botton image says "ghasaran." These Persian carpets use Farsi inscriptions. Arabic alphabet but completely different language and root other than Islamic words used in common. I looked up Ghasaran and it's a name. Ghasara seems to be a place although I am not familiar with it and Ghasaran may indicate the weaver is from Ghasara as the final "n" is used in some places to indicate a resident. The large oval medallions I can't read. The script is ornamental and often calligraphic forms are meant to be looked at and not read. That one in particular is a little crude in execution. I have come across others I could read.

Thanks for the kind welcome Jilly!

I think the carpet was a great choice for the room. The shop had several others in traditional designs that were about the same size, but I wanted something unique. A couple of the other rugs were obviously more valuable (even I could tell) and were slightly less money, but the rug wasn't an investment. It just makes me smile. The shop has another carpet with a similar design - obviously from the same donor. It's smaller (8x10) and right now is the same price. It goes down to $600 next week, then $300 at the end of March. (They were originally $1500.) Since I already have this one and don't have to worry about someone buying it out from under me, I'll try to pick up the smaller one at the lower price. It'd look great hanging in my bedroom.

Like the rug, the furniture was a lucky find. The table is rosewood (you have a good eye) with a gray glass insert in the top. The gold parts (stylized wooden swans) are gilded. The legs stand on piece of green marble. There is also a matching sideboard not visible in the photo. (Sounds like a furniture store ad) The suite came from New Orleans many years ago. My house is a 1920's craftsmen bungalow and I use a mix of period and contemporary furniture.

Thanks again for the welcome. I know I'm going to learn a lot here!

Thanks Krowgyrl I appreciate the information. I'll do some research on Ghasaran. It will be a great way to start my oriental rug education!

Hey, Robert!

First, you will end up with all the rugs in question. They will be a wondrous leitmotif!!!!

Next, many thanks for the corroborating & additional info re the dining suite; it is spectacular, with it's elegant and fierce, reticulated and stylized, undulating serpentine essence, forget, the gilding appears original and intact including on the chairs.......but...
I am convinced, we earn our "luck" and that you are no exception. Others saw it, others saw yr new rug and the remaining two which will soon be yours......you have earned eyes by Marcel Proust......you see "existing horizons with new eyes.'

I am very happy for you!

RugPro was right on the mark identifying my carpet as Kashmar. I found a very similar rug on Ebay: Beautiful Colors_Pictorial Design_Birds __Deers_Animals Item number: 350164901045

. . . Now to keep my finger away from the "Buy It Now" button . . .

Thanks for everyone's help!

I like that info from Krow :) the writing does get hard to read if it's not ornamental as stated... keep sending rugs our way!
