Hi,

And again, I would like please to have the attached small rather finely woven kilim identified as to,
1) approx how old
2) who / what tribe could have made it
3) natural or chemical dyes

Size is 4' 4" x 2' 6". It was purchased in Afghanistan in March, 1979.

Pic 3 on right is 'as bought', on left after a professional rug wash. Pic 3 is one square inch of weave.

And again, TIA!

After some study believe it to be a Kashgari Kilim.

Photo below form the very very very beautiful / informative book 'Kilim by Hull and Luczyc-Wyhowska'.

I wish I had seen this post when it was up. Very beautiful, the colors have a harmony about them so I would not worry if they are chem or natural since even natural dye can have chemical mordant and the questions cycle. As a side note, the rug looks quite refreshed, however, you may want to ask your cleaner to please screen the ends of the rug. Literally they take a screen similar as found on a screen door or window, and simply sew the screen to the rug to prevent loss during what can often be a harsh washing process. This will allow the cleaner to clean all the way to the end, and also prevent loss and snares while doing the right job.

Thanks for tip re ends!

Here is another, photo taken in an 'as bought' state (i.e. unwashed), which color-wise even more closely resembles the one from the Kilim book. However, the original one I posted has the more 'shawl-like' soft feel (and whose 'colors' I kinda like more).

The design has an interesting dynamic based on the character of the design element shape: almost as though a bit blurry, as though they were in motion. Nice piece.
