A fairly general question, but are there any telltale indicators that a carpet, particularly a handmade one, is a Chinese copy? I'm curious if being able to tell copies comes from experience and intimately knowing the style and history of the original, or if there are usually glaring craftsmanship issues.

Are there even Chinese handmade knock-offs of Persian rugs, or are they mostly machine makes?

It is mainly experience. But one main thing is character. The Chinese copies of Persians certainly do not have the same character, wool quality or weave. Additionally most Chinese copies are chemical dyes. The Chinese did many copies of Persians when the embargo to US started and I dot think they are doing it anymore, as it was not a success at all. However there copies of Turkish Hereke has been more successful but in my experience in addition to not having the same character or dyes but they are not as densely woven.
