Could you help me to identify this rug. I guess it is Persian. Wool, but shines like silk, very thick and heavy. I think the dyes are natural. Its size is 30" x 47". What are the origin, age, and value? Thanks.

Thanks for your opinion. It is interesting to me why you think that my rug and the rug in your link are similar. As for me, my rug looks more like this one. What do you think?

The color is not the same, but the shapes of the flowers look identical.

Your rug is of indian origin, it was made in Jaipur. The design is a mixture of persian Kashan and Isfahan design. Your rug has a insect / bug problem whichis visible at the long side edges. Damage of this type is typical for an insect that has a latin name of Anthrenus Museorum. It lives under the rug and eats the wool. You can see it where the wool stands up. Your rug need to be washed and must get a new moth /ug protection.
Value of a used rug in this size and condition about 50 - 100 USD for private sale.

Thanks for your response, KAD. I did see the damage on the rug's edge that you mentioned. However, I would like to know how you can tell that it was caused by the bug. It easily looks like the threads could simply wear out due to friction.
I'm also curious about how you determined that the rug is of Jaipur origin. I concluded myself that it has Isfahan design. But if the design is not indicative of it's origin, what clues can be used to tell where it was made?

Thanks a lot.

It is not very difficult to tell the origin of the damage. It is typical. If you have a worn edge the pile must be worn and the upper part of the selvedge it defect. This is not the case on your rug. The pile iis in good shape and most of the edges seem to be very good also. The wool stands up since the wool is defect at the lower part of the selvedge. Rugs wih this problem come often to our shop for washing, restoration and new moth protection. It is a very common problem.
Telling that the rug was made in Jaipur is also no problem if you are working in this busines. The wool, the size and the design are typical for these rugs.
