Looking for information on this fine silk rug. I'm pretty sure it's Chinese and it's the finest silk rug I've ever seen (even though the design doesn't require the level of knots) but apart from that I don't know much about it.

Anyone any idea/able to read the writing?

What would the dealers estimate a retail value for this?

It's 2.5m x 0.67m and has a KPSI of over 2000! Didn't get a chance to count properly when the customer was in with it and it was hard to count but it looks like around 48 x 44 knots... so around 2100kpsi.

Any info would be appreciated so I can pass it on.

I must say as a rug I dont like it myself but I note your take on it being fine. As you know the Chinese silk do not have as much value as their Turkish or Persian elder brothers. However, in the present market where the Chinese are buying their own stuff and this is not a copy but a proper Chinese production with a bit of luck a good auction is the best place for it. It seems to say that at one point somebody wanted to sell it for $5600. The retail value depending who is selling, can be between £2000 to £4000. For the translation just post it to a Chinese/ English forum and I am sure you will get a result pretty quickly.

I don't particularly like the design either and it's not really commercial or decorative for the UK market but it is extremely fine... Just heard back this morning from a Chinese manufacturer we have dealt with in the past who quoted $6000 FOB for a 3x5ft hand-knotted silk 'tapestry' (half a square metre smaller) in a similar design so I don't think your retail estimate is close on this one. Once you add delivery, duty and vat even buying at wholesale price it would cost a lot more than that. The customer bought the rug in China 10 years ago (the original label was asking for $5600 back then which - he didn't pay that amount).

It does not surprise me that the production price at the moment is higher than the price I quoted. However, you asked for opinion on retail price and I really cannot see it going for more than that in this market. But you have enough experience to know that you never know it might do. Its like some of these Persian goods that would fetch a better price in Iran than abroad. I think its the same thing with this piece. The commercial value of it over here is not that high in my opinion

I get what you mean, but obviously if we were to source a rug for £6000+ we wouldn't sell it for less. I guess I was more thinking a retail replacement value if it was insurance. The rugs going for more in Iran thing is getting more and more common - given the number of rugs in the UK (and I'm sure most other countries) between collectors, retailers, wholesalers and warehouses I wonder what effect this will have on the industry over there when export starts to dry up.

I dont think exports will ever dry up as such. In terms of Antiques it is much easier to find good pieces at reasonable prices here. But there is still quite a bit of production going on and people are still buying commercial goods. The good thing is it is easier in some ways to do production in Iran. We have been doing it for a long time now and we find that we can pick up better weavers and do more sophosticated work than we were able before.
