Hi All,

I bought a small silk rug direct from a manufacturer’s outlet (believed to be Ozipek) more than 10 years ago in Turkey. We had a full factory tour and watched them make the rugs, natural dye, etc. Turkey was going through a rough time with few tourists back then and they were asking about £4,000 for it saying that it would be worth over £6k in the UK. They also mentioned that it was made as part of their World Record attempts, which I understand they have held twice. After lengthy negotiations, I paid around £2.5k for it. it's only small being 22 1/2" * 17 3/4" but is a thing of beauty from both sides. I have counted the knots per square inch and believe it to be about 1,500. I am now curious as to its value and would appreciate any help you could give me with a rough estimate. I have taken a few photos to help.

Thanks in anticipation,
Jim.

I count 29 knots across, assuming it is roughly the same vertically I'd say it is around 850 KPSI.

If there would be one piece of advice I'd give to people going to Turkey it would be do not buy from anywhere that does factory 'tourist' tours, you will get tourist tour prices. You're likely to get a similar price at best to what you would pay in the UK (where you can return items) and the salespeople will tell you anything to get a sale and inflate values.

We don't tend to deal with Hereke silk but I'd say the uniformity of the knots isn't what I'd expect. Someone else will be able to give you a better opinion on the rug that deals more with Turkish rugs. It is however a nice rug with a fine knot count and looks decorative with quality materials. We would sell something like this (UK-based) Persian Qom for around £2995 new today, ten years ago it would likely have been under £1000.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I must be counting the knots incorrectly then as I count 39 and have double checked this number - unless I'm counting incorrectly of course! (Counting a "blob" as a knot). A similar count vertically makes this 1,521. If so, does this alter the value?

Regards
Jim

Ah... there you go! Obviously counted out 39 then said 29 in my head when calculating. This would affect the price, from a estimate I'd imagine we would currently be selling something like this at around £4000-5000. Still think 10 years ago the prices asked were very high. Rug prices have probably doubled in the past 5 years at source.

Sounds like I might have paid over the odds at the time then. I bought it because I liked it so the fact that it's appreciated in value is a bonus.

I think you probably did (although we deal with more Persian than Turkish). But rugs like these are the ones which will appreciate in value because they are that bit of quality and unique, whereas standard commercial rugs will always be standard commercial rugs high quality rugs get more and more expensive to make as labour and material costs rise.
