I bought this rug at the Salvation Army last week and would like to know what it is. It's flat woven, 145 x 240 cm (not counting fringe). There is a lot of dye bleed and I want to know if I should clean it or use it in the hall as it is.

Your rug was made in Iran in or around the City of SIRJAN in the south eastern tribal areas of the the Kerman Provence. The tribe that made the rug is called Afshari, the rug is made of wool used for warp, weft and the design. The techinic it was woven in is called Sumak (Soumak). If you take it to a pro he might be able to get the Color run out, but it depends what happend. It was produced within the last 20 years.

Thanks. Now I can tell people what it is when they admire it (and I can tell my husband that I didn't waste my money).
