Hello everyone,

I want to purchase an afghan rug and a Persian rug. The Persians are beautiful and am wanting to purchase one for my wife. I am wondering if I am getting ripped off. Price asked for Persians is $1,400 and the Afghan rug $550, this is without bargaining. The person selling the rugs here in Afghanistan is reputable. I've been lurking on this website for the past 6 months and have gained much insight, but, I would appreciate your opinion on values and any other info you may provide.

The first signature says 'Iran Qom Mehdi' but I don't think it is a true Qom (maybe outlying village). Second says 'Bahbahai' and the 3rd 'Qom Ahrmai' (excuse my spelling!).

Again, a lot of rugs are signed Qom which aren't actually from Qom, or even Iran. But they are nice enough silk on silk rugs.

The afghan is an typical Andkhoy/Kunduz or possibly 'Beljik'.

I don't think you are being ripped off for any of them but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to negotiate down - you may be able to reduce the prices by 10-30%?

It is not clear from your post how many pieces you are buying. It is clear that you are asking about four pieces but there are two prices. If the prices he is asking is for the four pieces then it is a no brainer, you have got a real bargain. Having said that make sure that there are no repairs or weaving faults and colour runs, especially with the silk pieces.

I always say the most important factor in buying rugs is that you have to like it and not be persuaded with price initially. However, once you have chosen the ones that you like then compare prices and value for money.

GOOD LUCK
