Hello folks,

a friend of mine owns a carpet and he wants to get
appraisal of its value, because a lawyer (a crook)
wants to make him "a good price". Unfortunately
he dind't tell yet what he likes to pay for,
so, he asked me for help.

The carpet was bought in 1936 in Berlin Friedrichstrasse
for 10.500,00 Reichsmark (approx 40.000 Euro nowadays)
and was property of his grant aunt (Fähndrich, an old wealthy family of cloth makers)
so he doesn't know the date of fabrication, either he knows the origin.
There are goats and flowers, looks European?

I asked him for the knots per inch and he counted
between 17 to 18.

The carpet is coloured with both,
chemical and natural dyestuff.
I wasn't able to have a look at the carpet...
He told me, that the carpet suffered from time
and humidity and mothes.

Let the pictures tell :-)

^Many many thanks!

Roman.

Hello,
It looks Persian, not European, and may have some moth damage as well as wear damage. The foundation looks pretty intact. I would advise your friend to take it to an appraiser in Berlin and find out what it's worth and what it would be worth if the damage were repaired. It's worth a little money to find out and if he does sell it, he won't get ripped off. It's potentially worth some $.
Good Luck!

Looks like wear in the upper left corner on the border with the fringe?

Yes, there is some wear there. But as i told,
I wasn't able to have a look at the carpet.

I told my friend to take the carpet to an appraiser,
but what would you say about the value of the carpet
after repairs?

As you told TMC, we would not like to get ripped off :-)

(Would be nice to have a reference point for the lower limit)

It is a old Tabriz - are you 100% positive about the age? Looks more like 1950. It is a rug that is not worth any repair, the damage is far to much.

@KAD
Hmm, my friend was not even born 1950, so we can't say with all certainty
that the carpet was made in 1936. But he is pretty sure
about the fact, that it was bought with Reichsmark, and that curency
has been exchangend with Deutsche Mark in 1945.
I have no doubt about your professionalism,
but what now?

Is it worth to be repaired when it's age is
as said before, in the middle 30's?

Thanks!

It is always difficult to give correct advise from photos, but as far as I can tell looking at the posted photos it is a Tabriz of lower Quality, maybe 25 or 30 raj. I don`t know any Tabriz in this Quality and Color that was before the 1950´s.

The damage is enorm, the entire upper area is eaten my moths, a repair would cost a fortune and would not be in any relation to the value of the rug.

Maybe it would make sence to have someone look at the rug that knows about it in Person. Maybe it will cost a few Euros but then you have a better Feeling about the Information given. I am sure there are a lot of poeple in Berlin that can help.
