Hi,

These pictures are not detailed enough to make any judgements, but I would really like to know by what name these styles are referred to, or what cities they are associated with (like Tabriz, Heriz, Hamadan...).

As always, thanks in advance!

First rug is a caucasian designed rug from Pakistan, usually sold as Kazak. Rug is recent production.

Second rug is from Iran, Qum area (Shahreza is probably the city it was made). Worn, selvedge was cut and rug was reduced in lenght. Also visible wear in pile.

Third rug is a so called Ziegler (also Mahal or Sultanabad) from Pakistan. Maximum 10 years old, pretty good rug.

KAD, thanks again. I am impressed that you can tell so much from these mediocre pictures. What shows you, in the case of the Qum rug, that the selvedge was cut and it was reduced in length? Do you think there was a kilim section or additional border section that was removed? Do you think it is also recent production? I can see the pile wear that you point out.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen

If you look at picture 2, 4 and 5 you can see the difference easily. Picture 2 and 5 show an intact rug with symetrical border. In the middle you have a main border that dominates the outer area of the rug. The main border is usually guided by smaller borders that are the same on both sides of the main border. If a rug is damaged by wear in cause of time it is often the fringes and selvedge that are worn most. So the small borders are cut off on both long sides of the rug and new selvedge is added. To keep the symetriy of the design the length must be reduced to the edge of the border that is now the new outer rim of the rug. If you remove the knots you get new fringes, so the rug looks good again. This "operation" is a massive reduction of value.

Poeple often are unable to understand the value of rugs. They compare new rugs (where the price is found by adding cost of material, work, taxes and the money the dealers needs to earn) with old rugs that are used and have damages like the one posted. Most rugs found on ebay are like the worn rug - they have many defects and repairs a dealer sees but a normal customer don`t.

Yes, it's clear now that you point it out that the minor border is missing. Very interesting. You can see why that would be a tempting thing for a dealer to do. I always "trust" an old rug more if I can see some damage. I would rather that it weren't repaired. Of coursed damage and "oldness" can be faked too! It's a job for a detective to figure out the history of a purportedly old rug.
