Hi,

I'm considering the purchase of a Ghoum rug (pictures attached). The dealer is asking about $15k for it, which seems steep to me. The design is beautifully executed (in my opinion as a novice) and I took KPSI measurements in 3 places showing an average KPSI of 432. The exact age of the rug is unclear, but the dealer claims to have had it in his possession for at least 13 years. I did not do a burn test, but I'm fairly certain the firer is natural silk for both the pile and the backing. I count 8 colors, not including the signature cartouche which adds another 3. I see no color variations at all and the rug is in pristine shape.

I would very much appreciate the thoughts of the forum members on the value of this rug an I'm happy to provide any further information you need.

Thanks!

Hi, I would say look for another dealer. The rug is brand new. Due to the rising prices in Iran the quality is getting worse every day. The low knotcount is typical for the production of the last 2 - 3 years. The prices are going up in Iran like a rocket, but not this high. In my opinion this rug came to the US just before the embargo or maybe even later. A fair regular store price for a rug like this should be somewhere around 7000 - 8000 US$.

This is a Persian silk rug but not a Quom, it is woven in Zanjan, and is of a relatively lower quality compared to a real Quom. I also think the price is more than double what it should be.

I agree with KAG. Even here in Turkey all I hear about are the prices in Iran. They are going up very fast. I passed on a Qom Qom which was mint about the same size for 2800$. It was great quality, I kick myself every day. But many of the dealers have some older Qom which are nice. But that dealer is asking for the moon. But out here I see pure silk Iran carpet, much larger than the one in question for less. And they are older.
