The other day I was walking around a TJ Max store and I came upon two very nice looking rugs in the clearance section. I wasn’t really looking for rugs but I thought they were very nice and appeared to be deeply discounted from their original price. I knew nothing about rugs but I liked the look and thought they would look good in my home. I paid $939 for each and the tag said they were originally something like $2600. I figure I will put one in the living room and the other (large flowers) in the kitchen under the table. One of the rugs had a tag that indicated the following information while the other didn’t have any info. I’ll attach links to the pics as well.

Rug #1:
Marcella Fine Rugs
Oak Platinum Nepal GNTB
1NPGNTB
8’6”x11’6” (Actual 8’5”x11’9”)
Serial #:IN2434-0033
Generic Tibeten Weave
Wool Pile on Cotton Foundation
Genuine Hand Made (Made in India)
Castille London
Genuine Super Fine Hand Knotted Rug
- I noticed that rug #1 color is a little darker on one end (about 1/8th of the rug) verses the rest.

No tag so no other info provided with rug

For the last few days, I’ve been trying to get a little smart on hand made oriental rugs and I came upon this site. What is your opinion on the quality and price of these rugs? Is $939 for each rug a good deal? With tax, the total price for both was $2025. Since I’m now learning about rugs, I’m curious about any other info that I can find about them. Is there any drawbacks to the Tibeten Weave/Knot verses other knots? Any idea what kind of wool is used? I did the wet rag rub test to see if any ink comes off. The test didn’t show any ink on the rag after gently rubbing. Any other tests I should do to determine quality? If these rugs are junk, I can return them to TJ Max within 30 days so I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts/comments. Thanks!

not halfway bad at all. However - know there may be something we're not seeing in the photos. It's not uncommon for seconds goods to show up in stores like the one you mention, so you do have to be careful.

Nice rugs, price is ok. If the color difference is caused by a new patch of wool it is ok. This is called ABRASH.

Thanks RugPro and Kad for the info.
I called the original seller and spoke to a lady at Marcella Fine Rugs. I gave her info from the tag and she was able to provide more information on the rugs. She said the rug is their highest quality rug. They have three levels of quality, silver, gold, and platinum and it looks like this rug is from their platinum line. She said the original price of the rug is around $30/sq. ft which equates to about $2,966.

I looked the rugs over and found a couple of flaws and I’ll try to include the pics on the original post. On rug1, I noticed a small section on the back with a couple of knife slice marks. I don’t know how that will affect the quality of the rug. As I mentioned previously, Rug1 has a darker shade toward the top. It sort of goes away depending on how you view the rug, but I think overall it is a tad darker than the rest. I included a pic showing the darker area. As Kad suggested, maybe it is Abrash. I don’t know enough to say whether it is or isn’t.

On Rug2, I noticed the outline around the edge has an area where it’s uneven and becomes narrower than the rest. I include a pic as well. Thanks for all your help to determine the quality of these rugs and whether $939 for each is a good price.

At a good rug retailer you should consistently be able to find good prices with less risk.

Many department stores specialize in taking seconds goods from suppliers. Sometimes the buyers acting on behalf of the department store know little about rugs, which also bears high risk.

Be careful, although it seems you did ok on this, I would highly recommend your next purchases be from a reputable rug dealer in your area.
