Dear Sirs,

twelve years ago I bought this rug because I loved it (and I do it today..). I spent 5.300 euros. The seller told me that this rug was made by Habibian, but at that time that peculiar fact did not interested me too much (if it was true).

I have asked to some experts by email if they thought this rug was authentic and expecially if the price was the right price. The answer was not unique, therefore I am asking your opinion and I thank you for every comment you will post.

Thank you from Italy,
Giulio Ansaloni

Looks like the beige border does not match the signature beige. I would say it is a forged signature

For sure a fake signature, but still a nice rug. 5300.00 for a fine Nain this size is ok.

Signatures being added are quite common. In a way it can be considered a sign of a good rug because they wouldn't usually bother to go to the hassle if it wasn't a viable piece.

Personally I think that price 12 years ago was high but today it would be a good buy.

An interesting point, but I don't necessarily agree as many factors have to be considered in this.

Reweaving signatures after completion is a simple and inexpensive process in rug weaving countries. The art in a convincingly good quality carpet is to start from the ground up and reverse engineer the entire piece - the wool, the dyes, the lah, quality, weave, not just the finishing touch. Especially for rugs so technically detailed as a Nain or Isfahan for example. If this were a Habibian Nain, it has to have all characteristics of the quality standards, not just the badges of a Bentley put on a Hyundai.

Does this rug have color run of the maroon?

I have seen Tabbas Nain of worst quality with added Habibian signature. There are workshops in Iran producing signatures in different qualities ready do add. It is very cheap to make an unsigned rug into a signed rug.

Does the Tabbas region produce 6-lah quality or just lower end sub 9-lah pieces?

I've seen plenty of lower quality rugs in general with signatures including Tabbas but I've never seen someone add one post weaving.
