Rug Identification and Appraisel - Need Help Urgently

Dear Fellow Rug-Experts,

We have a collection of rugs in our family that have been with us for over 30 years now... Handed down by family from wedding etc. Since we are in the middle of the unfortunate economic depression, however hoping to buy a house with the favorable prices now using the money from carpets, we wish to sell them - but before doing need some advice on whether we have the right pricing from local dealers.

The most complicated and mysterious of the rugs is the first one (dark red, carpet 4), which we believe is the most expensive (family told us at least $50k USD), but perhaps you can help us with this very important inquiry.

The last three of them, in order are as follows, please help to confirm the appraisals we received:

1. Silk Ghom Pink, 140cm x 200cm - local dealer offered 2000, another dealer offered 8000
2. Silk Torkaman Red, 125cm x 168cm - local dealer offered 1500, another dealer offered 5500
3. Saroukh Farahan, 125cm x 195cm - local dealer offered 3500, another dealer offered 10,000

* I might have the ordering wrong... Apologies.

For these 3 above, they were purchased in Iran back in 1979. The "mysterious carpet" unknown history and type - can you help identify please, and whether the estimate we hear from family of 50k USD is true?!?!

I am a bit confused with these photos as I can see neither Sarouk nor Turkeman in these images. However, Out of these photos, none is a 50K rug. It would help if you could arrange the pictures with your description of them.

Like rug firm I can't see a 50k rug here.

Whether or not they are silk or not I do not know but image 1 does not look Persian to me. Possibly Pakistani. Mystery rug looks like a flat-woven Kazak - again it's hard to tell by the pictures.

Rugs 2 and 3 are very unusual designs but to me look more Mehraban than what has been written. Pictures of the knotting would help.

Dear Rug Experts,

Thanks for the responses... Very helpful... After asking around our family, found out a bit more:

Mystery Rug is supposed to be a Silk Turkeman
Carpet 1 is a Silk Ghom Pink 140x200
Carpet 2 is Farahan/Malayer 125x168
Carpet 3 is Saroukh Farahan 125x195

This is all the information we have... What would you suggest we do to sell these carpets at best possible price? eBay? Sell overseas (e.g. Europe), sell at a carpet dealer in US?

Thanks for any help, we would like to get them sold soon by next year at latest so we can invest in house... Thanks again.

Beautiful carpets, but I would say the estimates and higher offers are favorable to you. You cannot sell in the US as we are not allowed to import. I would send the last two to Sothebys or Christies London.

Thanks, yes they are nice indeed, and sad to part with them, however we are trying to buy a home for our mother, and hope that she can sell them at a good price.

They are actually located in California, so import not required, but just wondering if sending and selling them in Europe would yield more $$$... ?

As for Sothebys or Christies, good idea.... I think they have offices in California.

If you were offered 3-4 times as much by one dealer than the other then take it. Remember if you send to auction you will lose anywhere between 20-40% of the hammer price on fees, taxes etc.

We will try these various avenues, and look into going back to the same dealer that offered the highest price.
