Hello!

My wife and I were given a rug from my wife's family. Her grandfather was an officer in the US Navy and acquired this rug during a tour of duty to the Mediterranean. Pretty sure it came back to the US in an aircraft carrier.

It was used in a formal dining room for some time so it didn't get very much traffic.

This rug is huge -- approx. 12' x 16'. It also has a tag on the back. The month is somewhat illegible but the year is clearly 1971. The origin tag is "Rabat".

Thank you for any information you can provide!

Jonathan

This looks like a Turkish rug to me. It has cotton foundation, wool pile, and synthetic dyes, and is of a commercial grade, not a very good quality. It can handle traffic for many more years. Even though it is large, I don't think it is worth more than $250-350 because of the quality.

Rugfirm,

Thank you for your review.

Do you think the tag is fake (see Photo 008), or does it have some meaning different that what it says ("Morocco",
1971, Provenance "Rabat")?

I am glad it can handle traffic for many more years. I really do love this rug. It is exceptionally comfy!

I really would not pay too much attention to the tag. It could have been added by the retailer indicating some info. for their office use.

It is a Moroccan Rabat rug, and the age fits also. These rugs are sold as Kings rugs. Large sizes are rather unusual. They have a think pile of pretty good wool. The design is strongly infuenced by turkish rugs (Ottoman empire). There is no real re-sell market to these rugs in the US since there nobody knows these rugs, but in europe they are sometimes used by interiour designers to give a room the north african touch. These rugs are still made today in a little different design and style. They retail new at about 15 - 20$ per squarefoot. I recommend to have it washed once in a while since a lot of dust gets cought in the high pile. Also this wool quality is often damaged by moths, so a good moth protection is always a good idea.

Thanks KAD. I was wondering because I've trolled the internet for months trying to find a rug that looked like this one, and I couldn't. If they are largely unknown in the U.S., that might explain why to some extent.

I really appreciate your explanation regarding the tag as well, as I had no reason to believe that it was not legit and/or did not mean what it seemed to mean. My grandfather brought back all sorts of goodies from his travels using free shipping courtesy of the U.S. Navy. Our family has some really large items that were transported like this and were certainly unusual in their day, though not so much in the modern era.

As you say the rug is thick wool pile and does have a tendency to get dusty. I will look into moth protection as well. Again, I appreciate your assistance.

If you search google use the words rabat royal tapis (french for rug / carpet). Morocco is mainly speaking french due to the french colonial period of norhtern africa. Serach picutres and you will find some rugs that are in the same type as yours.
