It is a iranian (persian) rug from the city of Tabriz, close to the borders to Turkey and Azerbeijan. The weave is medium fine, probably 100 - 140 knots per square inch. In Iran, these rugs are called 25 raj, this means 25 knots are found on a lenght of about 7 cm. It was probably made sometime late 1960`s to end 1970`s. It is not possible to date it closer in my oppinion since these rugs where made in this design and style for a rather long period without much changes. The design is called Sheikh Safi. One of the most famous rugs of all is the socalled "Ardabil" rug in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, GB. It was found in the Sheikh Safi Mosque in Ardabil, therefore it was called Ardabil rug and the design was named after the Mosque. The design of your rug is a replication of the design of this great rug.

Here is some information about the Ardabil rug, where you can see pictures of the original design.

KAD has an all-inclusive description of your rug. I will just add that the unique characteristic of this pattern is that you will get the center medallion by attaching the four corners together.
