Here is a link that might give you an idea of current market prices of qum silk rugs:

Nice Persian Quom. I would say $4600-4800 if the weft is cotton and about $500 more if the weft is also silk.

Hi

I inspected this rug in person and certainly is 100% silk all through, signed by "Adhaabi", pic 1 above reproduces the colours very faithfully.
You'll be shocked to learn that the ticket price on it was 50k!
At the time I actually offered the dealer 5k, but was prepared to offer him 6k, because I quite liked it, but of course he wouldn't accept that. I told him it is a nice Qom, but not a unique one. That's when I thought I post it to the group here to get price confirmation. It seems the going price for a nice 600-700 kpsi is around the $3000/sqm. A nice 500kpsi $2000/sqm.

Yes I know the pile and the warps are both silk, but how about the weft? You really can not see the weft to tell if it is silk or not. However by feeling the body of the rug itself, with just a bit of experience you should be able to tell. I think the asking price is too high.

the body of the rug was soft and very pliable.. I'd say you could tailor a suit out of it :)
I have limited experience, but from what I have seen, the ones with cotton weft tend to be bit stiffer and also bit thicker...

Is it the same dealer that wanted 27k for the Tabriz you posted a while ago? It he gets poeple to pay half price he has on his price tag, there is no reason for him to sell for less. But I can hardly belive someone would pay such prices.

Since the prices have changed a lot the last 2 years I would set a realistic selling price for this rug at around $ 9000 - 10000 if it is 100% silk (Pile, warp, weft - what I do belive). It really is a nice, fine and high end rug. If it is older stock, you might get it for less since then it was bought at a lower wholesale price.

That's a different dealer. Having said that, all dealers here pretty much use the same tactic in setting the base price, especially for high end items. Outrageous practice in my opinion and treats people as idiots.
But I agree with you KAD it is a decent piece, but I am not sure I'd pay 9-10k for it... honestly, I'd feel stupid if I did that.
If I wanted to stretch my wallet, I may shell out 7k max... It is not an extraordinary piece, although it is hugely attractive and had all my favourite colours in it.

I think you still have a lot of persian (iranian) rugs in the US. The pieces there are usually imported before september 28th 2010 when the embargo became active. Since then the prices have still gone up, but since the market in US is pretty much on the ground due to the economical situation, there is not so much effection to the prices of rugs there. The list I posted is from a german dealer who lists rugs of other dealers on his site. It is a pretty good way to check the international market price since there are rugs from all over the world listed there. On the DOMOTEX fair this year the prices for iranian rugs where at an extreme level. Dealers from Iran where asking $ 30000.00 for Qum silk 6 m² 70 raj silk/silk/silk wholesale price (customs duty still not added). They did not sell much, but japanese and italian dealers bought still. Wool / silk rugs 60 raj where at $ 1500 - $ 1700 m² wholesale price at some producers shop (Sherkat).

I am actually based in Australia, where good quality, locally available stock is limited and over priced.
The oriental-carpets.com is a useful benchmarking tool... but pictures are mostly awful and carpet description is not technical enough, which means it is hard to compare apples with apples over there.

Australia is a very different case - I was thinking about opening a store there 2 years ago. I know that it is very hard to find a good dealer in Australia. But we decided not to start a shop there since I think the market for high quality rugs is very small and unstable. Also guys selling rugs at prices like you posted ruin the market anyway.

I don't think they are selling any, KAD, from what I have seen :)
But otherwise I agree with your characterisation of the Australian market.
