You guys have been so knowledgeable. Thank you . . . I'm curious about one more that my dad has. I've learned a lot by looking at the forums and website. Chinese or Persian . . . I think from looking online at the rugs it is Nain?

If you can tell by the back photo and knots . . . how?

Hi, this rug is a chinese reproduction of a persian rug. It seems to be natural silk. This type of rug showed up in the market in remarkable numbers in the mid 1990`s and is still produced very much alike today. Design is a mixture from Tabriz and Qum.

Thank you very much for your input. So I'm left with the question how does one tell from the back picture if it's Persian or Chinese, and artificial silk vs. real silk. I've looked but I haven't found any good pictures of a side-by-side comparison so how does a novice tell . . .

I doubt that it is possible for a novice to learn this in short time. Ask a top level appraiser how he can tell the difference between a real Piccasso and a real good copy. He might me able to explain, but this does not put you in the position to do the same. This has a lot to do with experiance and dealing with it every day - for years! I would bet any amount that if you take 100 rug "appraisers" and have them look at this rug - at least 50% of them would be wrong. The guy you had appraise your rug is no exeption, it is like this very often.

To me, this is a Chinese rug with artificial silk, nothing exceptional, but it looks good.

Thank you again for your help . . . I have learned a lot about rugs in the past little while. One last question (I promise :-) ). Earlier one of you mentioned private party value . . . is this different than buying in a rug store and if so by roughly how much?

When a rug dealer estimates the value of your rug to a private party, it means that you should be able to get that amount if you offered your rug to a friend, relative, a neighbour, or even if you tried to sell it on a newspapaer ad to a consumer. Of course, the dealer would not pay that much for it. I guess the difference would be at least 30% lower for a dealer. I hope this answers your question.
