Please in need of some help.....rug was purchased this year in Anatalya Turkey..... has a number & letter on backside edge "5 J G" ..... is 3' x 5' ... was told it was pure silk - fringe appears to be.... Birds of Paradise theme....have read that there are Chinese import rugs being sold in Turkey as Turkish... so not sure now if it is Turkish... or just Turkish design and/or just knotted in Turkey or

Any help with these questions is greatly appreciated:
1. where is rug from
2. machine made or ??
3. are knots hand tied
4. is it silk on silk or ??
5. is this prayer rug style
6. what does "5 J G" indicate
7. what is it worth

You do not have very clear pictures of this rug. However, what I can tell you about it is the following:
This is a Turkish rug with a silk foundation, but to me, the pile appears to be wool. It is hand-knotted in Turkey with something around 200 knots per square inch, which is a medium quality. The pattern is nice (called Ghandili), but not "Prayer". The problem with this type of one-way pattern is that everything would be upside down when you look at the rug from the "wrong" side. The letters and numbers do not mean anything. They could have been printed by the owner as a means of inventory tracking, or printed by the washing factory in order to identify the owner of the rug. The market value for a rug like this would be around $450-$500.

Still with the additional images, this rug just doesn't look like a silk rug to me. Looking again at the images from the back side, a silk rug would have to have a much higher KPSI, no matter how coarse it is.

to me, it looks like maybe the foundation is cotton with some silk tassels added on...in the photos the fringe appears to reflect the light differently. Have you done a "burn test" on any of the rug? (Cotton/rayon smells like burnt paper, silk/wool like burnt hair)...carefully pull a fiber, hold with tweezers and burn with a lighter (away from the rug!)and sniff...my first 'silk rug' years ago was actually Rayon:(

Sorry, but I don`t agree to turkish.

1. where is rug from --> China
2. machine made or ?? --> No
3. are knots hand tied --> hand knotted, yes
4. is it silk on silk or ?? --> Maybe some silk in it, this quality is called 260l commmericial, 80% cotton, 20% silk.
5. is this prayer rug style --> Due to the dome in the upper part it is a prayer, but the design with the garden also indicates "Garden of paradise".

6. what does "5 J G" indicate --> Nothing important, maybe a bale or packing number.
7. what is it worth --> these rugs sell at a retail of ca. 55 - 60 $ per squarefoot.

The fringes are a bit more golden toned than the rest of the warp. They also seem to be added after the rug was finished. This indicates that they added real silk fringes for the burn test, but the rest is no real silk.

You did not mention the size - is is about 5 x 3?

KAD, thanks for commenting on this rug...I thought it looked Chinese, but was not sure. They did a nice job attaching those silk fringes, sad that's what it takes to sell a rug:(

Fredgrower, this quality is flooding the market in the last month. Most "qum" or "hereke" on Ebay and the rugs brought from tourists visiting Turkey are this quality. I have no problem with them, as long as they are sold with correct description and origin, but selling them as qum from Iran or hereke from Turkey for extreme high prices is just criminal.

and for my education, what does "ca" stand for when you answered the last question on its worth ie retail "ca" .... thanks again!!
