I bought this rug while I was in Istanbul, Turkey. It is very dark when viewed from one side and much lighter from the other side (lighter side as pictured below). It is approximately 5 feet X 7 feet. I know absolutely nothing about handmade rugs, so I would like to know the following if possible:

1. Where is this rug from and who is it made by?
2. Is it handmade?
3. Are the dyes synthetic?
4. I was told it is wool on wool, is this high quality wool?
4. What is it worth? (I paid $800 U.S. Dollars for it).

Thanks in advance!!

All oriental rugs look darker from one side, and lighter from the other side, because you are either seeing them against the direction of the nap (darker) or with the direction of the nap (lighter). This is a Baluchi pattern rug, made in Afghanistan, with a cotton foundation and a wool pile. It is handmade and the dyes are synthetic. It is a decorative piece with a beautiful pattern. The price is not out of line, but you could have bought something better and nicer with your money. Do not blame yourself though, the price is not outragously high. Use it for many years and enjoy it.

Thanks RugFirm. Just out of curiosity, do they sell rugs like this in the U.S. and if so, how much should one cost?

Yes, I am sure you can find similar pieces here in the U.S., just search online and spend some time on different websites. I do not believe that you can buy a similar rug here in the U.S. at a price lower than what you paid for yours, but over in Istanbul you should have paid a bit less.

It is a Beljik rug - the highest quality of the Khal Mohammadi range. The wool on these rugs is of a much higher standard than your typical rug and they can be quite expensive, I think you did OK. They call it Beljik because the manufacturers say the wool is Belgium wool, I don't know whether it is or not but it is much finer (similar to kork wool) than normal and the rugs are normally twice as fine as your typical Khal Mohammadi. The only issue I have with these rugs is that in my experience the dyes can be a bit unstable.
