I saw a beautiful carpet in a small city that has only has a couple of dedicated rug dealers. This particular dealer does not have a negative reputation but I cannot find anyone in a position to vouch for her either. I have never seen anything like this situation - this is a very neutral Persian Kashan city carpet with a predominantly beige background with one accent color in varying shades in the floral motif. The design is very aesthetically pleasing - but the accent color stops 3/4 of the way horizontally down the rug! The dealer says the weaver simply ran out of dyed yarn and points to the floral accents that continue in darker beige for the remainder of the rug to back up her claim. I am familiar with the deliberate mistake premise but there is so much carpet without accent color (this is approximately 7'9 x 10'5) so about three feet of the carpet on one end is completely neutral in color (beige/darker beige). I am just trying to imagine a weaver deliberately deciding not to wait for another batch of dyed yarn and finishing the carpet as is. I apologize for not having photos but have never seen or heard of anything like this and cannot find anything online. So, I'm not comfortable taking the carpet home to try without some more information from a neutral resource.

It isn't uncommon for a rug to have the yarn color switched at some point during the weaving. But usually, rugs with this type of issue are redyed after completion to remedy this and to make the rug easier to sell. I've attached a photo of a rug we've had in inventory forever. You'll see that three corners are yellow and the upper left one is orange. Haven't gotten around to dying it yet, but one day, we will in order to make it an easier sell.

If you like the rug, buy it, but I'd ask for a big discount.

jahann, I have seen a few of these rugs with a split medallion - do you know if there is a name or reason to this?
