Hello.

I might want to buy a carpet now when im on holidays in Kashmir in India. I met a nice guy sellign this carpet, claiming its made a camel wool in Kashmir, and that its about 60 years old. There is probably around 400 knots per square inch.

The carpet looks good, and has definitely been used - not sure how to judge the age.

I never brought a carpet before, so I would really like to know if this carpet is worth anything? The prize is around 500$

Yours,

Luka

looks like a prayer rug, possibly a baluch. More than likely not camel hair and not extremely old. This should be $100-$150.

This is a Persian Balouch, but could have been woven by the Afghans from the other side of the border. Pile is wool, and foundation is cotton, not very old, prayer design. In this type of rug, unlike Persian Isfahan or Kashan, warps sit parallel to each other and so you count each loop visible from the back as a knot. In fact, 2 loops should be counted as a knot. In some other types of Persian rugs, warps form a 45 degree angle against one another and where you see a single loop from the backside, the second one is hidden below it. As a result KPSI should be half of the number you counted. This piece is worth around $150 but pay a bit more for it if you absolutely love it.
