This (Tabriz) rug is one which I have just recently acquired here in Saudi Arabia. The size is 160x103. The base is pure silk, and the rest is wool with silk highlights. Though I searched and searched pictures of other pictorial Tabriz's on the net, I wasn't able to find any with the raised pattern, not to mention incorporating a western/european frame design. Does anyone here know what this type of rug is called? (You can see a very large silk qom dome rug behind it) :)

History buffs who may know something about the story being depicted are also welcome. Thanks for the help.

Looks like it could be about Xerxes... But I'm not sure. Looks like imagery from the ruins of Persepolis. But I'm not a historian.

Very nice rug. Yes, it is persepolis. 3D rugs are not very popular in the western market, so you usually don´t find many here. But it is of very high quality. Typical market are the UAE and Gulf states - as you mentioned you bought it in Saudi. What did you pay?

@ Diesel, you were right on with your suggestion. You can even see an image of the bull's head taken from persepolis here. (scroll down a bit to see it)

@ KAD, thanks for the info regarding the rug. Do you know any sights that have/show similar raised pattern rugs? I couldn't find even one during my search. I paid 20,000 Saudi Riyals for it here (US$ 5,300). It'll soon find a place on the wall next to this one very soon. One more thing, the framed design and signature within the 'painting' seemed unusual for a tabriz, am I wrong?

d_man - your Tabriz is very nice, and the other rug also, I remember you posted that one before. The theme Persepolis is very popular among pictorial rug makers. Most of these rugs come from Tabriz. The frame is used once in a while by other areas also:

Qum pictoral rug with frame design

Rugs like the one you have are very rare and unusal. It is not only the frame and the 3 D, it is the rug all together with all its components in design and quality.

KAD, thanks for the additional information again. I hadn't heard of the story of persepolis until now, but I have seen similar pictorals...usually scenes of everyday life, however.

The rug you linked to has some amazing details as well. Very impressive. I have a qom with a similar theme here . Nice rugs at the store!

Is there a technical name for the 3-D design, one that is commonly used in the 'rug world'. I still haven't been able to find other examples (except for some other rugs the dealer had). Thanks every/anyone

That's what I was looking for RugPro, thanks. From the definitions, my rug is a craved/embossed one. I read that they were especially popular in the 1970's, which fits as I was told mine is 30 years old +/-. Thanks again.

From the colors, design and the entire look of the rug I would say new to max. 10 years old. For sure not 30 years. The age is often said to be higher to make it more interesting to customers, but 30 years ago pictorial rugs did look very different.

Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me one bit. Although when I took a good close look at it, the fringes showed some signs of age...but I'm no expert.

Any information on the signature. Tarek Jalili or something?

Jalali was the last name of the person who designed the picture. "Tarh" means "drawing by" or "design of."
