My wife and I recently bought this 9x12+ and are trying to find more info about the design. The auction seller said he had it appraised and that it was a 1930's Tabriz.

I have seen the design once before, at a local dealer. It was an 8x11 version and they wanted crazy money for it (listed for over $32,000, but they were "willing to give us a good price!") It was labeled there as a Tabriz.

When we received the 9x12, I took it to get cleaned at another local rug dealer. The owner is Iranian-American. He thought it was likely a Kashan, but couldn't quite place it.

So, is this a Tabriz? a Kashan? something else? and I'm interested in knowing what the small flowers are in the field. Also, are those vases holding the flowers?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much.
Curt

This is a very nice looking Rug. And i agree with you it should be a Tabriz. I guess from 1950.

Chris,

Thanks. Any idea what the flowers are in the field? Are they henna flowers?

A salesman at the store with the absurdly over-priced 8x11 said the images in the field were sitars. I didn't think that was correct. I thought sitars were Indian, not Persian -- at least, I've never seen them in Persian rugs. Also, it would mean that the "sitars" had multiple tuning pegs (three deep) sticking out both sides of the fret board all the way up. Most sitars I've seen have single tuning pegs on one side, except at the very far end.

The images in the field look to me like vases with a tall stalk of flowers.

I do not think this is sitar design. If Henna i doubt. It is a typical millefleur concept. The ground design should be Afshan. With a lot of flowers.

Thanks. We paid $2500. It's in excellent shape. Nice pile. Not low or bald anywhere. No repairs.
