Just after reading fredgrowers success and her buying without thinking I did the same. How can you pass up a rug like this for $150 regardless it is is silk or not. The red is alittle bold, but I'm hoping in the house it will be more subtle.

The back knots and glimmer of the rug make me think it is silk. I know some can tell by the fringe, but I can't Would someone please clarify.
The auction was new, and only three people had looked at it. I was afraid of waiting. I hope that statement about fools rushing in doesnt apply here

I also realize the rug has it's issue. I hope the upturned corner doesn't mean it got wet, and I am sure there is other invenstment other than just cleaing

Don't blame me for your bad behavior:) ...however, the rug you bought looks pretty nice and for less than $200 with an ability to return, how could you go wrong? The style looks like a Tabriz (which I had to look up because I only know how to recognize my rug of choice), I think the upturned corner is because it's been rolled up for awhile. Looks like a cotton base, not sure of anything else besides that. Buying online is so difficult. You have to judge a rug from a few photos, never knowing what you might get...let us know when it arrives! How did you find this in the 'search'? (Don't worry, I'm not longer an eBay threat, I'm trying to wean myself from even looking, as I don't want to be tempted).

Please be a ebay threat. I'm a 56 year old man with a great job and I spend my night with my laptop on my lap putting every search word possible i case someone listed something good in a strange way. Just the fact that I knew so much about the rug you just bought gives a good indication that I'm spending way too much time. But as I'm told so many times there are worse hobbies/addiction.
I searched "estate" and probably the luck was timing as it was only listed for 2 hours.

It is hard to idetify from the picture, but the fringes look like a cotton warp.
Has it been cleaned ?

No it has not been cleaned and that need was identified in the auction. Cleaning will be the first thing I do. I'm not concerned about the fringe being cotton since that is common amongst Tabriz. I will receive the rug in the next couple days and post better pictures. At the point that I purchased it I believed it was fine wool. The last time I guessed wool on this forum it turned out to be silk.

Thanks

Nice rug and good price. I would also say India (Jaipur) fine wool shine washed. Very good and durable quality.

Got the rug, and was pleased with the rug. I would call it a nice rug, but by no means a great rug. I was thrown off by two things on line, and I jumped to buy it before asking fo the sellers clarification and additional pictures.
I imagined a very high knot count, and I couldn't see the fringe knotting so I was thrown off there. But it is an attractive rug to be put in a spare bedroom rather than a show piece. It was an impulse buy that didn't sting me, but did end up estatic.

And of course KAD had the ID right on.

I'm glad it was nice enough to keep. I once saw something I wanted on ebay (with the buy it now option), but took the time to ask questions, someone else swooped in and bought it and I still regret the hesitation on my part. Sometimes you just have to take a chance. As for KAD, I doubt there are many who could top his expertise (no offense to anyone else)! If you get a chance, you should post some photos of the rug:)

kad, i agree with india as previously stated, although wouldn't the design, colors and vintage be more congruent with what was coming from varanasi in the 90's as opposed to jaipur?

RugPro,
could be, yes. We had rugs like this in the late 1980`s from Jaipur that where a lot like the one posted, shine, wash and colors where almost identical - this is what made me think it is Jaipur. On rugs from India I rather look at the material, luster, knots than the design since there is hardly any typical design to be given to a city. Often we had the same design from Jaipur as well as from producers from the Mirzapur / Bhadohi / Varanasi triangle.

I started a production of "antique sarouks" in Agra this year. It turned out really great - handspun wool, great feel, colors just like the original. I showed it to some of the dealers who buy rugs from me - they could tell it is from India after looking at it very carefully, but none could tell the physical origin (city).

Maybe these pictures will help although they are't the upclose pile pictures that would probably really help.
