This rug is only 20X39" and obviously has a few years on it. Is it a Kashan or Isfahan or even Iranian, and any information on the signature?
I'll make my guess and see if I am getting closer to IDing a rug. I would guess Kashan except I don't think Kashan are typically this high of a knot count. Obvioiusly the borders are very simple which could be a bad sign of being Iranian? Also it is a wool, not silk rug.
Am I getting closer?
This rug was on ebay. I bid a small minimum and to my surprise won it. I guess I can always find a place for a rug this size and I am always drawn to fine knotted rugs.
Obviously, the last picture doesn't have anything to do about rugs, but I became a grandfather for the second time yesterday and I will find any excuse to share a picture of my grandkids

Thanks,

Hi Bart.
mmmh...this rug does not look typical Iranian to me. Why i am so sure the frings are not from silk? My guess: Egypt.

Chris, I tend to agree about the fringe not being silk. This picture shows more "fringe". It was sold as a "antique silk rug". I bought it thinking it wasn't old and kork wool. If it is Egyptian that is another matter, but do Egyptian rugs have that fine knotting?

This is not a woolen rug. It must be silk. And on the last pic the frings look silky. Are the selvages original single wrapped? Mmmmh...maybe Tabriz silk? Curious. Tabriz silk rugs often do have this small Kelley size.

P.S. could be from Qum, too.

I asked the seller why it was lisited as an antique, and their reply was the person they bought it from said it was old.
That probably explains the poor description

I have another silk on silk trabiz, and I had several people they are very rare. They aren't rare in a value sense, but you just don't see them.

Chris it does have a single weft

It is not a Qum silk. It is also not a Kashan or Tabriz silk. It is not Iranian. What is left? As mentioned: Egypt and Turkey. First sight looked like Kayseri from the Kelim between the fringes and the rug, and the overall look. But it does not have the typical Kelim of turkish rugs on the selvedge, it has a classic Shirazi. Also the design is a copy of Kashan. Putting all the pieces together would let me say Egypt / Cairo production. There is a silk production that goes up to ca. 450 kpsi.
