I notice on ebay there are lots of 2x3 foot silk Qom rugs.
They are very pretty looking, but what are they made for?
I mean they are too small for area rugs, or prayer rugs...

What is the purpose of such a small rug?
Are they just practice rugs for weavers in training before attempting bigger ones?
Often the patterns are similar to larger rugs..

I don't know the answer.

But for centuries in western countries oriental rugs were mostly used not on the floor but on tables or other pieces of furniture or hung on the wall (we know this from old paintings). And today, too, many people hang smaller fine rugs on walls or put them on a piece of furniture.

it's an easy way for people to get into the market. They're relatively affordable 'collectibles' or tokens. Tourists like them a lot, and they're small. A friend of mine has many of the 2x3 scattered in their home. two small silk qum at either side of the bed, and one in the entryway on a table.

so what is a reasonable price for these small rugs, if they are of high quality - like 700+ kpsi?

Yes I know!
But assuming it is a good quality, like 75-100 sq/ft? so 500-600 dollars?

it depends. maybe the color balance is no good, maybe the weave is not great, if the rug is ugly. Most people dont like ugly rug. Even if the knot count is the same on two rugs, one could be worth much more than the other. Do you have a picture of one you are talking about?

I've noticed some of the rugs on ebay are posted on different seller names, but the same rugs. I got one of mine listed this way, offered my 'best offer' rejected, waited a couple weeks, found the same rug, "different seller name" offered again and got it at a good price. (That's why it looks like so many, because of the duplicate listings). I bought my 1975 all silk qum 3'6x5'2 from ebay and paid $700+52 for shipping. What's the kpsi on this rug and any other photos?

This seller always posts the cheapest priced rugs that look real good in the photos, I have not bought anything from him, but wonder what the 'catch' is. Shipping $100-200, covers some of the price, but with the high knot counts I really wonder where his rugs come from.
