Here is the repaired fringe on my "the fringe is a mess" rug. I only had brown silk thread and used this as a practice to try and figure out the stitch used in tying off the fringe. I couldn't master the technique, so I used a sort of modified 'slip knot', to secure the end (for washing), then I plan on removing the brown thread, replacing it with white silk. Could anyone explain the correct knot technique I should use (websites, videos, photos...anything that could help me understand how to do this.) Also, since this rug is from the 60's, is there a difference in whether I should put knots in the fringe or not. Does shortening the lenght of the fringe reduce the value?

I had taken 5 of my other rugs and had them washed this week and picked them up yesterday. I was suprised to see they had 'trimmed' the fringe and smelled very much like they used bleach on them as well. The chinese thick silk rug came back stiff, almost like it wasn't rinsed well enough. I'm A bit worried about taking this rug in now:(

great job is right, looks really nice. no good about the washing. remembered this from the archive on bleaching fringe fredgrower, what line of work are you in? you must be very handy.

The sad thing about it, I had read the article about 'bleaching the fringe' and ment to ask about it when I dropped them off...I just assumed since they were a high-end shop that they wouldn't do anything that would cause long term damage to the rugs (I didn't even think they would shorten the fringe without asking either). Is there anything I can use to try and neutralize the residual bleach, I'm pretty sure it was bleach, as the rugs smell like it.

*I went to college beginning with an art major, but switched to health care (it makes more $). Being an artist makes me appreciate the art, skill and labor involved in making beautiful rugs.

I know I shouldn't expect perfection and rarely find it. I just pulled my stiff chinese silk/cotton out of the bathtub, I couldn't stand the way it felt (after the professional washing)...I guess this is why I knew to knot the fringe myself!

I'm glad now you committed to the washing in stages, keeping your best rug till last.
Also, it looks like trusting your own ability to stabilize the fringe was good move.

If your chinese rug returned "stiff", it is nor unususal. Brush it against floor direction, vacuum it, and it shoud be fine again.

Really nice work on the ends. be careful on the bathtub rugs i washed one a few years ago and had no idea how dirty it was. Allergies went crazy, sneezed for about 45 minutes straight. A lot of cleaners love touching up that fringe, I've even seen new rugs with bleached fringe and be extremely brittle. I would let them know you had to address some of their work after receiving the rugs. wouldn't lose faith in them, but would talk to the owner for the purpose of future cleaning
