I obtained this beautiful pictorial Isfahan rug (I think!).
I've had it hanging on my wall as a tapestry.
It's approximately 7 by 5 feet. The bordering is dark dark indigo blue.
I hope its worth something!
Can anyone tell me what the cartouches say?
Is the signature legit?

Looks like a Esfahan to me (but I'm mostly clueless), very nice, where did you acquire your rugs?

Very beautiful rug with great workmanshiip. Unfortunately pictorals aren't as popular as classic designs. I won't try to put a figure on it, but if you want what it is worth you need to find someone who loves Persian poetry and lore and it can be hard to find someone in that class.

Signature says "Baft Moussavi Sebesht", I believe, which means "woven by Moussavi Sebesht" or something similar. The letters are not very precisely woven, it seems to me, neither the Roman nor the Arabic.

Roman letters suggest that done for the export market, though, as btuma said, the western world is not that interested in Persian pictorial rugs with inscriptions these days.

Yes I can understand why pictorial rugs wouldn't appeal to everyone.
I'm not planning on selling it though. Pictures don't do it justice. It feels nice to touch even.

So is it Isfahan then? I've had it for a long time, but I don't know how old it is.

If you look at the photos from my topic 'Isfahan garden girls' under 'show them your knots' you will see it looks identical in the knots and colors of yarn used, I was told mine is from the 80's...if you get tired of your rug, you can send it my way, as I like the pictorial rugs:)
