I dont have pictures of this particular rug, I just came across it a few days ago in a local rug shop. It was a nice silk qom (hunting scene) , nice color combinations, nice details...and then...there was a numerical code woven with the signature...something like NB1234 (just an example) . Is this normal? I'm wondering why such a traditional rug would include such a thing.

Sometimes they write the year the rug was made. It is different from the gregorian calendar used in many contries of the world.
If you would like to check when the rug was made - here is a link:

Thanks kad. I'm going to go by that shop again soon and get a picture of that signature. I didn't see any months or dates like the one I remember on the rug. It felt a bit off-putting, perhaps because I wasn't expecting to see that. Thanks again for the info and the link.

As KAD says, it is most probably the year of production. In some cases, a producer will give the finished items in his workshop something like an ID number. This is to help them go back to their files and see what design and color combination was associated with that specific number in case the rug is going to be woven in a different color or size.

I finally got around to going back to the shop to take a couple of pictures of that rug with the weird signature. I personally liked the color combinations because it wasn't one I had seen before...but that signature just looks....weird.
