Hello all, I am told this is Persian, roughly 60 years old. Any help in identification and value would be greatly appreciated. The size is 6x9' feet.

Nice rug! I like the designs & colors, looks to be in good shape. I (guess) yes Persian, maybe Isfahan, and well made. For that size would be worth a few (or several) thousand...not and expert, but have looked at and priced (eBay) and to find this size and quality (in good condition) makes it desirable. Is it silk or cotton foundation? Do you know where it came from?

It is a real nice iranian Tabriz, seems to be 70 raj. It is about 10 - 20 years old, but not 60 years. It is kurwool and silk on silk.It retails new at about 12.000 - 15.000 USD.

Yes, Persian Tabriz with a silk foundation and some silk highlights in the pile. Tabriz started producing this quality of rugs not that long ago, so your rug is not 60 years old. I think it is a 60 raj Tabriz so I would estimate a market value of about $8k for it. Hard to tell by the picture, if it is 70 raj, then I agree with KAD.

OK, so I was way off on my guess...I need more lessons!!! As for pricing, there is a huge difference on what a rug comes in on a appraisal and what a private seller can expect to sell it for. Sure, you could spend more than $10,000 in a store, but try turning around to resell it...not easy! KAD, how about some more lessons on identifying rugs (I saved the post you wrote about Nain/Isfahan), but how about Tabriz. Where else do they weave high-end wool on silk? (I'm starting to be able to identify Chinese silk, the perfect barrel knot fringes are a good clue)...

Thank you KAD and RugFirm, this is very helpful. KAD your estimate is precisely in line with the seller...you don't happen to have a close friend in New York do you? ; )

I will take another picture of the back to help show the knot count. This is a great forum!

Fredgrower - I will write an information about Tabriz rugs, how to identify and the pricerages in a few days, will not be able to do so right now, we have a lot of work - very unusual for summertime. About your question which other cities make fine rugs:
Top class is Qum (silk), Tabriz (makes up to 100 raj), Isfahan (we had one 1674 kpsi - I counted!) Nain in 6 la, 4 la or rare silkbase rugs, Ilam (Sherkat production), Keshan (some silk rugs at 645 kpsi), and my favorite: Meshed (Saber and Amogli workshop).
trg5 - I do have a lot of friends and customers all over the US, and of corse NY and LA are centers of rug business. But I didn`t knnow the rug you posted and whom it is from. But seriously - real nice rug. I really love it. Outstanding design and great colors. Not typical for US Market, but this is the real fine persian rug. It was not made to fit US or European taste, it is Persia pure.

Thank you KAD...did not mean to ask for lessons, but just so interested in fine rugs (wishful thinking a rug as nice as the one posted could be had for a few thousand!)...I always enjoy learning. Thanks for the list of cities, I'll do some research. Glad you're busy, it's very HOT here and pretty much everything slows way down. Have a great summer:)

Fredgower, I know how much you have trained your eye in the last year. You know a lot more about fine rugs by now than many rug dealers in US I know. It is a pleasure having contact with someone like you who has such interest in this art. :-)

We had a rather cold and summer with quite a bit of rain until saturday. Was good for business, but since yesterday heat and thunderstorms make sure we don`t forget it is summer.
