Hi,

My grandfather bought this over size rug from an antiques dealer who claimed that the carpet is over 150 years old. He purchased it over 40 years ago. I believe its a Samarkand(Not Sure). I would like to know what design it is and what it might be worth. Its size is 630 x 314 cm and it has 120 knots per square inch.

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Beutiful piece. This is an old Persian Malayer. I am not sure if the pattern has a specific name. For such old pieces, and with the pile being so worn is such an unusual size, it would be hard to evaluate them. You need a buyer who knows what he is getting, has the knowledge about pieces like this, and appreciates antique pieces. I would say anything around $5000 would be a fair price for it.

In my opinion Samarkand is right. It has some elements that look like Malayaer, but border design,, the pomgranades, size and style are very typical for Samarkand and Khotan rugs made before 1900. Age 100 - 140 years. Real rare piece. There is one a lot like yours, maybe a little better condition on Doris Leslie Blau website, asking USD$ 65.000.

Samarkand on DLB website.
