Hi there,

I am SO thankful to have found this forum!! I have inherited several rugs and know nothing about their history. I do know what I see are beautiful, well made rugs... but I must sell them and need to know their origin, when they were made, what type they are - hand woven or machine, and an approximate value (and any other info buyers want to know). One has a tag - "Hand Knotted...Made in Iran" - but I haven't a clue what it's worth or when it was made.

I fell in love with each one ... 3 in particular I could curl up and fall fast asleep in!! However, I have multiple large dogs who will, no doubt, thrash them. The rugs are far too nice for that. They have been stored in my garage for the better part of a year and I've decided to sell them.

I have read thru some of the posts and web site and found expectations for pictures and other required info. I hope I am able to provide what you need to help me.

There are 5 rugs total. Pictures are attached.

The measurements for each rug varies, some by quite a bit. I don't know if it's relevant but I've included lengths of the left and right sides of each rug, and the middle for the large and extra large rugs. The widths were taken of one end, the middle and the other end. I'm sorry, I do not know which end is technically the top or bottom.

Measurements do not include fringe.

Rug 1 - the smallest, very tight weave, leather edging sewn on underside, no tag
- one side measures 80 3/4" x 53 7/8"
- other side measures 79 3/4" x 54 1/2"

Rug 2 - large, bold colors, designs are not exactly centered, tag has letters and numbers (language unknown)
- one side - 116 3/8" x 76 3/4"
- middle - 117 3/4" x 75 1/4"
- other side - 116 1/2" x 74 1/2"

Rug 3 - xlarge, water damage on 1/4 of one end - colors bleed and fringe is tinted and dirty, tag has numbers, measurement, and "Hand Knotted Woolen Pile of Carpet" "Made in Iran"
- one side - 135 1/4" x 93 3/4"
- middle - 132 1/4" x 92 3/4"
- other side - 131 3/4" x 92 3/4"

Rug 4 - xlarge, needs cleaning and repair, missing pile in various places, tag/tape has numbers
- one side - 131 1/8" x 91 1/4"
- middle - 132 1/8" x 93 1/8"
- other side - 132 1/2" x 93 3/8"

Rug 5 - Runner - possibly silk?, no tag
- one side - 130 1/2" x 32 3/4"
- other side - 130 1/2" x 33 1/4"

Again, I'm sorry I do not know which end is technically the top or bottom... I am very limited when it comes to knowledge of rugs. That's were you come in - I really need your expertise. I feel way too vulnerable to try to sell them on my own.

Any help is greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance! Please let me know if there is any other info you require.

Sophie

You have some beautiful handmade rugs most from Iran. The experts will tell you more. You really do need someone to give a sense of value. I'm only here to say "don't get impatient and go sell them to someone for nothing" because they do have value, and I believe others will comment in time.

All of the rugs are commercially available hand knotted carpets . Beautiful, but also quite readily available. Some of them appear to be ECG goods, which are mass imported carpets. All decent carpets, but nothing collector quality or particularly unique

The first rug with ivory - this is a tabas nain. It's lower grade than most, but still tight. maybe 1970's,

Second rug is a course tabriz nafabajad type - 1950's, these go on ebay for $200 - $900 +/- ebay 10x13 size from a dealer.

Third is a course Heriz with synthetic dyes - $800 or so from a dealer. water damage you're looking much lower.

Fourth is a Mehrivan from the region of Heriz, dyes look a bit better, 1950's vintage

Fifth is pak caucasian kazak. It is wool. often mistakenly advertised as vegetable dye, although many colors cannot be attained by just natural dyes. There are many, many different qualities of this carpet, some indecipherable from a novice eye. This looks like pakobel goods, generally $300 for a 12' runner in his quality. If better grade, could be upwards of $1400 but it does not look like the better grade

I apologize for the delay...

Thank you btuma6! Hopefully I'll be able to sell them for what their worth....

And thank you very much Rug Pro - I appreciate you taking the time to respond with detail. A couple more questions if you would?

- What are the 1st and 4th rugs worth?
- Where would I sell them?

Also, is there a directory of certified appraisers? Perhaps I need the rug with water damage to be seen up close and in person?

You probably should have someone see them in person. I can't say the value of the water damage because I cant see it, and values should always be determined before a rug is damaged. Where are you located? As for selling - you could post then on ebay, craigslist, rugbuzz,

Some nice rugs, but none of them worth getting excited about:
Rug no. 1 is a Persian Qum, the foundation is cotton, the pile is Kurk wool, about 30-40 years old, worth around $500-$700 if in good condition.
Rug no. 2 is a Persian Tabriz, not very high KPSI, with a Ghafghaz pattern, wool pile, cotton foundation, about 30 years old and worth $300-$350.
Rug no. 3 is from Heris area (Mehravan), about 100 KPSI, cotton foundation, wool pile, about 30-35 years old, worth $850-$900 without any damage. The extent of the water damage will reduce this amount accordingly.
Rug no. 4 is from Heris area (Gorevan), about 100 KPSI, cotton foundation, wool pile, about 30-35 years old, and perhaps worth $900 if it's undamaged and if the pile is not too low.
Rug no. 5 is a Pakistani runner with a Russian "Kazak" pattern, and worth around $500 if in good condition.
Overall, these are not exquisite pieces and if you get someone to see them in person, they should be able to give you more precise estimates.
