I have recently purchased a Persian Rug and would like to learn a little more about them in general. I am told it is 100% wool and hand knotted. I do not know when it was made, but there is a set of Persian numbers stapled to the back that read 10-1075 (I think). I have some photos. It is enormous: 24' 4" X 14', so I couldn't get the whole thing in view, right now.

What are the revelant characteristics of these rugs in terms of identification, dating, region produced, etc.?
Should I scotch guard it, as was suggested by the folks who delivered it?
Is it really hand made?
What do the numbers on it mean?
What is the pattern called?
I do not plan on selling it, but would like some info on value so I can ensure it (if appropriate).
It appears to be clean (or at least, no obvious stains), but is there something I should do if it does get dirty?

THanks in advance!!

This is a Persian Kerman rug, probably over 50 years old, handmade with a cotton foundation and a wool pile, and it seems to be in a relatively good condition. There is no specific name for the pattern, but it is a typical open field corner and medallion Kerman rug. Colors are beautiful and personally, I love the rug. Some of the numbers stapled to the back are the measurements in centimeters, the other set of numbers showing a serial number probably attached by the washing factory to make it easier for them to identify the owner after the washing is completed and the rug is to be delivered. These numbers do not mean anything and can safely be removed. Scotch guarding is not necessary but may help you keep it clean. A rug of such a large size would be both difficult and expensive to wash so to keep it clean is advisable. Use a vacuum cleaner on it as often as possible to get the dust particles out. As a test, rub your hand back and forth on the pile with strong motions for 20 seconds and if your hands get dirty, it is time to have it washed. Do not attempt to wash it at home as it needs to be done by a professional. Smaller sizes of Persian Kerman rugs would be much easier to evaluate than larger sizes, as these are not in great demand and a potential buyer needs a large space in which they could use such a rug. However, I would estimate the value to be in the neighborhood of $15,000, but I could lower or raise that estimate if I saw the rug, and could touch it. The number of knots per square inch should be around 200-225. Overall, this is a great Kerman rug with a great pattern and lovely colors. Enjoy it.
