Hello all,

Mr. Dilmaghani recommended I post pictures of some rugs I'm considering buying to see if anyone could provide an estimate of their value. I'm currently living in Kabul and have the opportunity to purchase rugs made locally (Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, India) for what is supposedly a significant discount on what I would normally pay back in the States. However, not being an expert or familiar with rug prices I'd like to make sure I'm getting a fair deal. I don't know if it's possible, but I'd really like to not only get an idea of what their value in the States would be, but also what the local prices should be around.

As there are several different rugs I’m looking at, I’ll only post overall photos to begin with. If anyone is interested in providing an estimate for one of the rugs I can post detailed pictures.

Here are all the details I know (or think I know) so far;

Rug 1: Persian rug called “Ishfahan” and supposedly ~30 years old. Silk and wool pile on silk wefts. 6x9 ft.

Rugs 2 and 3: Persian rugs called “Tabriz”, also supposed to be ~30 y/o. Silk and wool pile on silk wefts. 6x9 ft.

Rug 4: Another “Tabriz” but supposed to be ~60 y/o. Silk and wool pile on silk wefts. 6x9 ft.

Rug 5: Persian rug called “Tabriz Mahi” around 30 y/o. Silk and wool pile on silk wefts. 6x9 ft.

Rug 6: Persian rug called “Khum” said to be ~30-40 y/o. 100% silk. 8x12 ft.

Rug 7: Persian rug called “Naine”, new and 100% Silk. 4x6 ft.

Rug 8: Afghan rug from Andkhoy called “Usufi”, new. 100% wool 6x9 ft

Rug 9: Afghan rug from Andkhoy called “Museum Pattern”, new. Wool on cotton, 9x12 ft

Again, I have detailed photos for each of these so if anyone is interested in taking a stab at an estimate then I can post them.

Many thanks for the assistance,
Rob

PS) If anyone has advice on how to upload pictures directly, that would be appreciated too. :-)

Hey Rob:

Providing all the rugs are mint condition, and not irregular seconds goods...

Afghan/Pakistan figure retail in the states $25-60 per sq ft. based on quality.

Isfahan circa 1960's/70's - depending on quality, condition, technical structure anywhere from $150-350 square ft. This one looks signed. That's nice but does not necessarily add value unless a really nice recognized workshop. Don't believe the seller's word, if we recognize in the states, that's what's important.

This is just a general guide as we cannot see anything to quantify quality or stated origin...

RugPro,

Thanks for the advice and estimates. I'm definitely a novice to rug buying so getting input from the experts is very reassuring. Since posting last I've actually purchased the first rug you discussed (Rug 9) for $3700 which seems to be within the range you proposed.

I've also managed to upload detailed pictures of each of the rugs which I hope can help clarify the question of quality.

Does anyone know where I could find a picture library of rug signatures? Although I can't "read" the signatures on the rugs I'm looking at, I thought I might be able to at least match them against those in a library if such a thing exists.

Thanks,
Rob
