This piece is beautiful. It is so thick and heavy, it took 3 guys to move it. I know very little about rugs and was told about this rug by it previous owner.

It was purchased in Malaysia from an Iranian rug dealer 15 years ago. I was told it is Persian. The lady I bought this from lived there for 8 years and got to know the dealer very well. She paid the equivalent of $4000 US dollars for it and was told she got a phenomenal deal. She paid to have it shipped to the states in 2003 and has since remodeled and sold it to me.

Please look at the pics and tell me anything you know. If more pics are needed... Tell me how I can help. Am I standing on $10,000? Tell me YES!!

I agree with Rugpro, it is from Pakistan. It is a quality usually sold as Pak Persian rugs. This means the design origin is from Iran, but the production was made in Pakistan / Indian area of Kashmir. These rugs usually have a very good quality and fine, shiny wool. Your rug seems to have some small silk or viscose highlights around the design.
I am not an expert in prices in USA, but with a fair price it would be between 3500 and 4500 $ new. Private sale for used depends on condition of preservation, but your rug looks good. I would say 1000 for private would be ok - what do the dealers in US think about it?

Here is a link to a rug a bit alike to give you an idea:

Definitely Pak-Persian, not sure if it's wool and viscose (artificial silk) or 100% viscose. Cotton foundation.

Nice enough looking rug and nice enough quality but she paid well over the top 15 years ago! It would maybe be around $4000 new today and it's not the type that is likely to increase in value with age (unless kept in new condition for a long time). Sorry.

This is a good looking rug, but definitely not a Persian and most probably Pakistani. To me, it would be fair if you paid something around $1200-1500 for it. Good luck.
