Seller states it's antique sarouk, approximately 26.5 x 48, and asking $400...so, i believe it very well is what they claim it is, but am i crazy to pay this much for it from a private seller??? looks to be in good condition, but am not sure.

So, what does the forum think???

Yes, Sarouk, about 1930. Condition: not so bad, but too bad for 400$ - my opinion. Needs quite a bit of work to get it back into halfways good looks.

Yes, this is a Persian Sarouk, but looking at the image from the back side of the rug, I see that the pile is unraveling, and a couple rows of knots have alrady come out, so the rug is not in perfect condition. I do not think that the price would be outragous for such a piece provided it is in good condition with no repairs or worn spots.

i agree with rugfirm. not too bad of a price, but lower is always better because it's a little high for private seller. Keep in mind it does need some mending. especially because the outside border would need to be removed to properly fix on the end, which would detract from final value. So do figure 70 per end for fix and securing plus, this fix would unfortunately likely reduce value

Thanks again, forum. i went back with a price of $100 and she decided to sell on ebay, however, it's been a week and i have not seen it there. but i did see it back on craigslist for $300, so perhaps she'll come down even further. On the other hand, i just listed another one...please let me know what you think, too.

again, i love this forum!

Due to the condition I would prefer this smaller one rather than the larger you listed. The larger rug is a bit older and has the more interesting design, but the smaller one is more value for the money. and if you can get it 300$ - X, it is very ok.

KAD, thanks for the great feedback; things just got more interesting. So, the larger rug on the other listing just came down dramatically to $200 (i offered $100 and he came back w/ $200) and the smaller rug above i think I could get for $250. So, based on those new numbers, which one is better value??? obviously it is difficult to tell from the photos, but based on what you see and your experience (which is a lot), what would be the better purchase in terms of value, desirability, potential re-sale after 20 years, etc????

I look forward to your response; thanks!

Would you be surprised if I say: take both? I prefer the design of the larger one, the condition of the smaller one seems better. The price for two is not far away from that one was offered for. I would take both (I always due this if I can`t decide, and it never was a mistake).
