Sckeptic about a rug's value

Hello,
I got this Persian rug as a gift from my mother, all I know about it is that it is at least 20 years old. The other day I had a gentleman over who claims to be an expert on appraisals tell me that it is at least $3,000, I do not believe him. Can anyone shed some light on the origin of this rug? The rug is 82x59in, no stickers or anything attached to it. That is all I know about the rug.

Your appraiser had the benefit of seeing the rug in person, but from the photos, it looks as though the rug is Chinese in origin and only Persian in design. If the rug is in fact Chinese, then the appraisal would be more like $600-700. If the rug actually is Persian, then the $3000 appraisal wouldn't be far off.

Thank you so much for your reply, this is why I am so doubtful of his appraisal. I went back to his email and this is what he believes the carpet to be:
- From Tabriz (not sure).
- Shah Abbasi motif.
- He is not sure if the dye is synthetic or natural.
- ~250 KPSI.
- Hand woven.
- Couldn’t tell if it was ever tagged.
- Didn't tell me what material it is made of.

I would say the KPSI would be more in the range of 150-180 from the picture.

The value is really dependant on the perspective - if it's resale value in a private sale it's one thing, if it's replacement value at retail it's another and the $3000 wouldn't be too high.

Your rug reminds me more of indian rugs produced in the 1980 - 1990`s. It is for sure not persian (iranian) origin. The design is common in Tabriz but also in Sherkat rugs made in the Sarouk area. The original design was copied. Color and style of the rug remind me strongly on pieces from OBEETEE (very good producer from India) production from the time I mentioned.
