Greetings again,

I am still here in Afghanistan and ran across another Qum silk rug at the bazaar. I took some photos to see if anyone could determine whether this rug is a real Qum or something else. It is about 3 feet x 6 feet (approximately 2 square meters). The knot count as best as I could determine is about 800-900 knots/inch. I did notice that one corner had some distinctive curling which I took a couple of photos of. It seemed to have a nice hand and drape and folded up quite compactly as you can see from the photo.

Does anyone know what the cartouche says?

The dealer is asking $2000 US dollars for it. Is this a good deal?

The photos are posted in the link below:

thanks in advance for any input from the collective.

That's about as cheap as you'll get a Qum silk these days even as a dealer.

It looks like the writing says "Ali Rahbar's Qum." The spelling is a little off, but sometimes that happens because the weavers are illiterate. I think the price is quite good for the size. The curling on the edge can be remedied very easily by sewing on a strip on the back. Just be aware that there is currently an embargo on Iranian made goods, and you are not allowed to bring them into the country regardless of where you are traveling from. Unless you have an "in" at customs, I'm not sure I'd risk it.
