Bought rug3 (256x172cm, kpsi approx 153) for USD 960 in Malaysia. Told it is a new rug made in the Armenian region. However I have a feeling that it may not originate from the Caucasian region.

Rug2(240x177cm, kpsi 75, not sure whether I counted correctly) and rug1(251x204cm, kpsi 140) are on loan from a different shop and will negotiate a price for them.

I am a newbie. I would greatly appreciate your expert appraisal. Are all these rugs from Caucasian region or are they from Pakistan? How can one tell the difference?

Are Kazak rugs from Caucasian region better made and more expensive? Would Rug1 and Rug2 be around USD960? Are these all hand woven, wool and dyed using vegetable dyes?

Thanking you in advance.

These all look like Afghan Kazak - new commercial pieces. Kazaks are very popular anywhere from big department stores to rug specialists these days. But their prices have shot up in the past 6 months or so. Probably exported from Pakistan but made in Afghanistan or by Afghan weavers. Original Caucasian pieces are more authentic and probably more expensive in good condition.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Are these commercial pieces wool, hand woven and dyes used are natural? What sort of price range would these sell for? Thanks again.

Warmests regards,

These are commercial pieces (in the sense of being woven for the export market, following a demand for such rugs). They are wool and handwoven (as far as I can tell). The colors may or may not be natural (very hard to tell on screens, which tend to distort colors), but they are in any case chosen and produced so as to imitate natural colors. (The streaking, the slightly muted tones.) They don't look like real Caucasians for many different reasons. But a real (and that is antique) Caucasian in this condition could easily cost 10,000 to 50,000 dollars. I don't know what the marked values of the ones you bought would be. On ebay you'd pay roughly 1,000-2,000 USD for the larger ones, I think.

Thank you very much Little-persia, Shereen , bukhara, and rugpro. You guys have contributed immensely to this forum and helped us appreciate the finer details of the humble rug. I will buy rug1 and rug2 for starters as my wife likes them very much. And will look out the for real thing, probably smaller pieces when we go on our travels to the Middle East in the future.

Warmests regards,

Sesh
