Dear all, thank you for taking the time to read this.

I recently came across 2 very interesting, and in my opinion, very beautiful Shirvan's at a local merchant. The dealer says his father bought them in Caucasus about 30 years ago, and is unsure about their age (possibly 80-100+ years).

Here are the pictures:

What strikes me is, very much unlike other Shirvans I have seen before, they have almost no color, as if they had been completely washed away. At the same time, the carpets are in quasi pristine condition, showing very little sign of age. As you will see, the second carpet (picture with me pointing) has a rectangular zone where seemingly, only the red color is visible. Also remarkable is the complexity of the design on the first carpet, in particular the various animals in the central emblema.

I would appreciate your thoughts on these carpets. Are they really Shirvan? Any clue about their age? What could have caused this washing of colors while leaving the carpet otherwise in great condition? (the dealer seems unsure about that, speculating this was done on purpose, to set them aside from other carpets of the region). Why would the second carpet be entirely washed out/in very faint colors with the exception of the red in a specific area of the carpet? Finally, I am interested in buying the first carpet. The asking price is very steep, even though I have already negotiated it down significantly. Any idea how much one would be expected to pay for such a piece?

Thanks much and I am looking forward to reading your thoughts and comments on these somewhat unique rugs.

Hi,

Hello, both rugs not from Shirvan, they from Konakend. circa 1920-1940.

Bad dyes .... sun .. .. washing ....

estimate - 700-800$

Thanks bukhara, much appreciated.

I had in the mean time identified them as Konakend, but good that you confirm. Originally the dealer wanted 8k for them, which is outrageous. At the moment he still wants 3k for them.
The irony is, I don't want to pay 3k for them, as I suspected, and you confirmed, they are worth much less, but I must admit I actually like the washed out look (never been a huge fan of the caucasian colors). I'll just make an offer and see if I can snatch it for a 10th of the originally asked price. Bear in mind, this is not an egyptian souk we are talking about, but a very renowned Swiss carpet merchant...

typically when dealers do not know what Caucasian rug they have, they call it Shirvan...

dyes are tired, but that should not persuade you to not purchase. Buy them if you like them, not because you're getting a great deal. Most individuals interested in rugs of this style motif prefer rich, saturated dyes. This carpet has a bad red dye which was rampant in village rugs 1900 - 1930 although some disagree with the dates. The red bar going across horizontally in one of the rugs is probably closer to what the field is supposed to be, and at one point how it actually appeared to the weaver eye. Age has turned this batch of the lot to a brown color.

Again, buy them if you like them, not because you're getting a great deal. They are very charming.
