Hello everyone!

We bought an old rug today at the antique market. We chose it because of it's pattern which looked quite different from the usual 'persian' type rugs. The colors are almost gone (sun probably?) it's quite big: 7.04ft x 11.48
Here are the pictures:

We would appreciate if the forum members could help us identify it's age and/or origin.

Are you sure this is meant to be a rug, not a bedspread?
Could it be machine made?

hi Shereen,

it's definitely handmade, e.g. the patterns seem highly irregular across the width of the rug.
We've showed it to a friend yesterday who does modern textiles, she mentioned that it's made out of wool and silk but she couldn't tell us anything else.

After looking at hundreds on images on the Internet, we'd guess it's an Anatolian kilim, maybe from Konya? But of course, we don't really know much about the topic...

here are some more pictures, if it helps:

as of bedspread, hard to say :/ it's quite heavy, but maybe?

Greets,
Matas

Your rug is north african, middle atlas mountains in marocco. The area it was made is called Zemmour (Semmour). The warp is usually made of dyed wool, mostly bright red, sometimes yellow. The weft is also made of wool, often black or brown. The design is stitched on in dyed cotton, usually the colors white, red, black, tourquise or blue, sometimes gold. In moroccan souks (bazaars) they are often sold as tuarek rugs (whichs is not correct). The colors of the cotton design are not very stable and get an antique touch due to loss of color relatively soon. Looking at the back you usually find quite bright colors. A rug your size sells retail around $ 500 - 800 new, depending on how much work is in the stitching. If you want to get it washed make sure you have someone who knows about these rugs because the red bleeds out very much and can ruin the entire rug unless the washing water is set very sour.

wow, thank you very much! thanks for the tip about washing it, we'll keep in mind.
Is there a way to determine how old it is?
we've paid around 500€, which is probably bit too high for a used one?

Grüße aus Berlin!

Shereen,
oriental rugs all together is like an ocean and my knowledge is a drop of water. I am also learning every day, this is what is so fantastic about rugs - it never gets boring. And if you have the virus, you will never get rid of it (as you know :-)!)

Matas,
your rug is not so old, my guess based on the pictures is around 10 - 20 years. The are not very common in Germany or US, you find them often sold by poeple who brought them from a trip to Marocco (and often paid a fortune for it)or in Spain and France. In the last few years some maroccon dealers started offering them online in webshops, often along with tea glasses, maroccon iron lamps and other handicrafts from north africa.

EURO 500 is ok, might have been a little cheaper, but if the rug is nice and condition is good, what is some money more or less. The quality is good and you have not been ripped off.

Viele Grüße aus Bayern nach Berlin - und auch nach Conneticut, Shereen. Euch einen schönen Abend!

KAD, you're too modest. At least a bathtub full of water. But you're right, it never ever gets boring.

And yes, once you've been bitten by the rug bug, there's no escape. It's a chronic condition. There may be periods of remission, but it'll always come back ... :-)
