Actually, it's a 6La Authentic Habibian sold recently on eBay for $330,000.00 US.

I am curious about how KAD and RugPro determined that the signature was added later. Is it because the closeup photo of the signature shows that the white/cream pile immediately around and within the signature is slightly less white and less even than the surrounding pile? It is well known that most Habibian signatures on Nain rugs are fake, and it would be good for amateurs like me to learn how to spot them. In fact, last weekend I went to a rug auction in which a 6-La Nain with a Habibian signature was offered for sale.

The rug described by 127Fascination does look to me more like a 6La than a 9La, because of the sharpness of the design in the closeup photos. A knot-count would easily decide this issue.

I don't know how KAD or RugPro went about this, but there are a few features: (i) does not look like the real Habibian signatures look (much coarser, and not using the right "font", as it were); (ii) wool seems slightly different; (iii) colour of wool (look at the light blue) different; (iv) way signature is added to the design is in various ways aesthetically unpleasing: you don't use a beautiful palmette, and then cut it off halfway for a signature, nor do you generally fill half a border with a signature without at least adding some sort of frame, though I don't think you find this half-border thing much with real Habibians at all (but obviously I haven't seen all of their rugs). Add to this (v) that the design of the rug is middle-of-the-road Nain boring (well, this is a personal comment, I find typical Nains boring), if rather impressive, and (vi) that there are many hundred times more (both 6-Lah, and 9-Lah) Nains with fake Habibian signatures than true Habibian rugs ... well, just my non-expert thoughts.

The signature looks like totally different weaving, wool and dye... it looks how a fairly poor patch repair looks! It doesn't blend in with the rest of the rug!

Would say the rest of the rug is 6 laa though.

If you ask a specialist for paintings to tell you how to tell the difference between a real antique painting and a professional reproduction you may know the theory, but you will never be able to tell the difference unless you have seen enough originals and fakes.
Same with rugs.
It is not hard to tell on such a poor fake like on this rug. Any carefull viewer can see the difference in wool quality surrounding the letters and the rest of the rug, also the different color. It is not a bad Nain, and I also thnk it is a 6 la. But if someone paid 330k for it, it is too much. I would love to have such customers :-)!
Some things to remember:
Habibians are very expensive (this is why they are oject to be faked). Usually you don`t find them on auctions (unless they are fake), on ebay or any other whatever great opportunity to get a rug cheap.
You find them in real good stores where they cost the price of a Habibian.
PS. It is not a Habibain design.

The white material around the design which is called silk highlights does not look like natural silk on this picture.
