I very recently (yesterday) purchased a new Bijar rug made in Persia. It is a small 2.5"x3.5" with a Herati design. KPSI seems to be around 280-290. I paid around $840 with tax. I have been looking around and I am really starting to feel like I overpaid. I have 30 days to decide if I want to keep the carpet or exchange/return it. I guess I need someone here to tell me if I way overpaid or if my deal was fair.

I purchased the carpet at a retail location in Milwaukee, WI.

Please let me know if I overpaid and what would be fair for a carpet like this. Also, is it normal on some rugs for the fringe to be shorter on end vs the other? Was this a mistake, repair done, or just normal for some rugs?

Thanks

Hi, welcome to the world of rugs! Being a 'young' collector, I have made my share of mistakes: buying a silk rug that was really 'art silk' (the dealer said it was silk), buying on vacation from an auction house a rug with a serious flaw (that I didn't notice until way later), buying a Esfahan (that was made in India), trading a large rug for a smaller one (but not worth as much as the dealer claimed)...and this is only the start...but with this said, I still love rugs and don't let the 'bad' stop me from searching...

When placing the size of your rug on the "rug estimator pro" the price comes to ~$76 a sq ft or $477-$848...fringe shorter on one side is normal. So, it seems you paid on the higher end of the price scale (if I entered the info correctly)...if you 'love the rug' keep it, if it bothers you or doesn't fit the 'space' then take it back (at least you have that option).

totally agree with Fredgrower and learning about buying rugs. It seems to be high retail that you paid, but keep in mind we can't get rugs from Iran defined by current sanctions. In some ways, if there is a rug to pay full retail it would be a Bijar. they last forever. estimator seems to be spot on, I say this would be top dollar in some respect, but it looks to be a really good rug overall.

Price is absolutely ok. You bought a new high grade persian Bidjar rug. Different lenght of fringes is normal. You can cut them to equal lenght if you have very sharp scissors. But I would not mind - it is normal.

The discussion in most boards go around used rugs. Therefore the prices are often lower. If you buy a brand new rug, they are much higher than most poeple think. And the rug you bought is top quality and brand new.
