Hi,
I could use your kind help with this 32" x 63" rug. It has some damage (edges & tears) but I think it is an older Turkestan? rug. The knots look like wool, the warp looks like finer straighter fibers, probably goat hair? How old is it and where exactly is it from? Thank you.

Looks like an older, possibly antique (late 19th, more likely 1st quarter 20th century) Chuval (largest tent bag) bag face, with six Salor main guls and chuval secondary guls, possibly Tekke (two rows of sunburst secondary border, multiplicity of smaller borders, elem motives - elem is the decorated extra bit outside the border) or Saryk (purplish colour). Looks like wool on wool to me, but find this hard to say from photos.

The purplish red comes often with this kind of Salor gul chuval, but I can't remember whether this rules out Tekke origin.

With the exception of the purplish red, where I can't tell, I'd think the colours are natural.

(And I'm not an expert on any of this.)

Thank you Shereen, and bukhara, for your very helpful expertise.

Since it is probably a Chuval and not a floor rug,
what kind of approximate value would it have it this condition, do you know?

Chuval bagfaces (or even whole bags) are often used as floor rugs in the West, they are as sturdy as any rug when they are in good condition (much sturdier than, say, antique Turkish Kilims, which were made for floor use).

As to the value, you could ask the people at the Turkotek forum (www.turkotek.com), since old chuvals are often collectors items, so it may depend on factors of rarity which I'm not familiar with.

My guess would be 200-300 dollars, assuming it's early 20th century, but I'm really no expert (despite what bukhara kindly says: I haven't handled hundreds of these pieces myself, as some people on the Turkotek forum have).

It could be repaired and still be used on the floor, but note that collectors of tribal pieces (as in non-commercially produced rugs made by members of certain ethnic groups) often prefer them "as is" rather than repaired.
